Zimbabwean cricket legend Heath Streak, former captain of the national team, has passed away at the age of 49 after a valiant battle against colon and liver cancer. This sad moment in cricket history occurred on September 3, 2023.
Heath Streak, a revered figure in Zimbabwean cricket, found solace in the early hours of Sunday, September 6, when he peacefully departed this world at his farmhouse in Matabeleland, southwestern Zimbabwe.
His family and close friends were by his side during this poignant moment, as confirmed by John Rennie, a family spokesperson and former Zimbabwean cricketer.
The passing of Heath Streak follows a recent unfortunate incident when his former teammate, Henry Olonga, erroneously announced his demise on social media.
Thankfully, this misinformation was swiftly corrected, and Streak was indeed alive. Henry Olonga issued a heartfelt apology for the error.
During his illustrious cricket career, Streak achieved remarkable feats, including 216 Test wickets and 239 one-day wickets, solidifying his status as one of Zimbabwe’s cricketing legends.
He holds the distinction of being the first Zimbabwean cricketer to reach 100 wickets in both Test and One Day Internationals (ODIs).
Moreover, he is the sole Zimbabwean player to amass 200 ODI wickets while also notching up 2000 runs, and he accomplished the impressive double of 100 Test wickets and 1000 Test runs.
Following his retirement from international cricket, Streak embarked on a successful coaching journey, collaborating with various international teams and Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises.
However, in 2021, he faced an eight-year suspension from the International Cricket Council (ICC) due to breaches of anti-corruption regulations in 2018.
Nadine Streak, Heath’s devoted wife, shared the news of his passing on Facebook, describing him as the love of her life and the cherished father of their children.
She revealed that he had expressed a desire to spend his final moments in the embrace of his family and loved ones, before peacefully joining the celestial realm on September 3, 2023.
Heath Streak’s legacy in the world of cricket will forever be etched in the annals of the sport, and his contributions will be fondly remembered by cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
