World No. 2 Alexander Zverev will face six-time China Open champion Novak Djokovic in a highly anticipated quarterfinal in Beijing.
Alexander Zverev has booked a high-profile quarterfinal showdown with Novak Djokovic at the 2026 China Open after advancing through the opening rounds of the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing.
The German, ranked No. 2 in the world, defeated Chinese wildcard Shang Juncheng, ranked 250th, in the second round on Saturday. The victory kept Zverev’s campaign on course as he targets his first China Open title.
Standing in his way is one of the tournament’s most successful players. Djokovic, a six-time China Open champion and 24-time Grand Slam winner, will meet Zverev in what promises to be one of the headline matches of the quarterfinal stage.
Djokovic currently leads the head-to-head record 9-5 against Zverev. Their most recent meeting came in the quarterfinals of the 2025 French Open, where the Serbian emerged victorious.
Speaking after his second-round win, Zverev acknowledged the difficulty of facing Djokovic on a court where the Serbian has enjoyed considerable success.
The German said he was excited about the challenge and recognized Djokovic’s strong record in Beijing. He also highlighted the Serbian’s ability to remain one of the most difficult opponents to beat in best-of-three-set matches on hard courts.
Zverev enters the contest with confidence despite the demanding late-season schedule. The 29-year-old dismissed concerns about physical or mental fatigue and insisted that he still has enough energy for another major challenge.
He explained that fatigue becomes more mental than physical at this stage of the season, particularly when players have important goals remaining. Zverev also expressed confidence in his ability to recover and produce high-quality tennis when required.
The quarterfinal will provide another opportunity for Zverev to measure himself against Djokovic as he continues his pursuit of a maiden China Open championship.
For Djokovic, the match represents another step toward adding to his impressive record in Beijing, while Zverev will look to narrow the gap in their rivalry and reach the tournament’s semifinals.
