Shai Hope’s unbeaten 162 powers West Indies to their highest successful ODI run chase as India suffer a dramatic defeat in New Chandigarh.

West Indies ended the ODI leg of their India tour on a memorable note, completing a stunning eight-wicket victory while chasing 352 in New Chandigarh. The result gave the visitors a historic consolation win, although India claimed the three-match series 2-1.

Shai Hope produced the defining performance, remaining unbeaten on 162 to guide West Indies to their highest successful ODI run chase. The previous record had been set against Ireland in 2019.

Hope also broke a long-standing individual record. His unbeaten innings became the highest score by a West Indies men’s batter in a successful ODI chase, surpassing Brian Lara’s 153 against Pakistan in Sharjah in 1993.

India were put into bat after winning the toss and suffered an early setback. Jayden Seales dismissed captain Shubman Gill for one before removing Virat Kohli for a duck from consecutive deliveries.

Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad then steadied the innings. Rohit moved towards another ODI century but was dismissed for 92 by Keemo Paul, while Gaikwad departed shortly afterwards after making 57.

KL Rahul subsequently took control of the innings. Playing his first match of the series, Rahul produced a powerful unbeaten 129, including 16 boundaries and six sixes. Naman Dhir and debutant Anshul Kamboj also provided useful late runs as India posted 351.

West Indies began the chase aggressively, with Hope immediately putting pressure on the Indian attack. Amir Jangoo supported him with a half-century, but a mix-up resulted in his run-out after he failed to make his ground.

Hope continued to dominate despite losing partners around him. He brought up his 21st ODI century before accelerating during the final stages of the chase.

Keemo Paul contributed a brisk 44 before his dismissal, while Gudakesh Motie added an unbeaten 19. Hope then launched a late assault, reaching 150 before guiding West Indies across the finish line with 10 balls remaining.

The teams will now shift focus to the five-match T20I series, which begins on October 6 in Lucknow.
