Government says partnership with Alibaba will help Pakistani SMEs expand exports through digital commerce platforms
Alibaba Group and Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing digital trade and expanding global market access for Pakistan’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The agreement was signed in the presence of Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan, who said the government was pursuing broad measures to accelerate the digital transformation of the SME sector in line with the prime minister’s vision.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Haroon Akhtar Khan said connecting Pakistani businesses with international markets through e-commerce platforms remained a key government priority.
He said the collaboration with Alibaba Group would create fresh opportunities for youth, entrepreneurs, and startups, while supporting exports and the growth of digital commerce in Pakistan.
“The SME sector serves as the backbone of the national economy,” he said, adding that the government was committed to encouraging investment, exports, and industrial expansion through business-friendly policies.
Haroon Akhtar Khan described the partnership between SMEDA and Alibaba Group as a significant step toward strengthening Pakistan’s digital economy and improving international business connectivity.
Secretary Industries and Production Saif Anjum and the additional secretary of the ministry were also present at the ceremony.
Pakistan has increasingly focused on promoting digital trade and e-commerce as part of wider efforts to boost exports, improve financial inclusion, and support the country’s growing startup ecosystem.
