Water Board says pipeline damage caused by K-Electric power surge has been repaired, but normal supply may take 17 hours to resume
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Saturday ordered the immediate restoration of water supply across Karachi after taking strict notice of severe shortages affecting several parts of the city.
The chief minister directed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation to ensure uninterrupted repair and restoration work on damaged supply lines and sought a detailed report on the causes behind the disruption.
He also instructed authorities to keep residents regularly informed about restoration progress and emphasized the need for preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
During a briefing, Water Board Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Ali Siddiqui said that an electrical surge from K-Electric caused the 72-inch Line No. 5 at the Dhabeji pumping station to burst at three locations.
According to Siddiqui, two pumps at the pumping station suddenly shut down during the night between May 20 and 21 due to the power disturbance, causing pressure fluctuations that damaged the pipeline.
He added that ongoing work on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project also partially disrupted supply from the line, leading to a daily shortfall of around 48 million gallons of water in Karachi.
The Water Board chief said both technical issues had now been resolved, but it could take another 17 hours for water supply across the city to fully normalize.
In view of the situation, the Water Board administration appealed to residents to use water cautiously until complete restoration of supply is achieved.
