Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway has confirmed that a third instalment of the beloved Princess Diaries franchise is actively in development, more than two decades after the last film captivated global audiences.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hathaway said the long-awaited sequel is progressing behind the scenes, though it has not yet been officially greenlit. “One hundred percent, we’re constantly working on it,” she said, adding that scheduling challenges had temporarily slowed progress.
The actress explained that development efforts were recently paused due to her commitments on another major sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is currently in production and set for release on May 1. “It cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space,” she said, noting that managing both projects simultaneously proved difficult.
Despite the delay, Hathaway confirmed that Princess Diaries 3 remains a priority. “The intention is to make Princess Diaries hopefully next,” she said, while stressing that the project is still awaiting final approval. “It is not greenlit or confirmed yet.”
Interest in the franchise remains strong, with fans continuing to campaign for a return to Genovia. Hathaway acknowledged the demand but emphasised the importance of a strong script before production begins. She also echoed sentiments shared by co-star Meryl Streep regarding the need for creative readiness.
The original Princess Diaries film, released in 2001, followed shy teenager Mia Thermopolis who discovers she is heir to the throne of Genovia. The role marked Hathaway’s breakthrough performance and launched her international career.
Reflecting on the film’s impact, Hathaway previously described it as life-changing, noting her experience working alongside Dame Julie Andrews as unforgettable.
With renewed momentum and fan enthusiasm, Princess Diaries 3 remains one of Hollywood’s most anticipated legacy sequels.
