Apple invests $30 billion in Broadcom to expand US chip production

Apple on Wednesday announced a $30 billion multi-year investment agreement with Broadcom to expand the design and manufacturing of custom silicon and wireless connectivity technologies in the United States, marking the largest investment under its American Manufacturing Program (AMP).

The agreement forms part of Apple’s previously announced $600 billion commitment to strengthen domestic manufacturing and bring more production back to the United States.

Apple and Broadcom deepen manufacturing partnership

Under the deal, Broadcom will manufacture more than 15 billion chips in the United States for use across a range of Apple products.

The company will also invest $1.5 billion to expand and modernise its manufacturing facility in Fort Collins, Colorado, where it will produce advanced radio frequency components and next-generation wireless connectivity technologies.

Apple said the investment is expected to support hundreds of manufacturing and engineering jobs in the United States.

Tim Cook highlights US manufacturing commitment

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said the agreement builds on the long-standing partnership between the two companies while reinforcing Apple’s commitment to American manufacturing.

“Apple and Broadcom have a long history together, and this new phase of our partnership further accelerates our commitment to American manufacturing and innovation,” Cook said in a statement.

“The cutting-edge components built in Fort Collins are essential to delivering the incredible performance and connectivity our customers expect, and we’re proud to deepen our investments in U.S.-based suppliers that share our commitment to excellence and innovation.”

Cook also thanked the U.S. administration for supporting domestic manufacturing initiatives.

Broadcom to expand Colorado operations

Broadcom President and Chief Executive Hock Tan said the company would expand its manufacturing footprint in Colorado as part of the new agreement.

“Broadcom is proud to continue to work with Apple after decades of success together, and we share a strong commitment to American innovation,” Tan said.

“With Apple’s newest commitment, we’re pleased to expand our manufacturing footprint in Fort Collins, where we create groundbreaking technology that connects people around the world.”

The announcement represents Apple’s largest single investment under its American Manufacturing Program and underscores the company’s broader strategy to increase semiconductor production and advanced manufacturing capabilities in the United States.
