Apple has long stayed away from the foldable smartphone market, but new reports indicate that the tech giant is finally preparing to enter the segment.
According to recent leaks, Apple could unveil its first foldable device, expected to be called the iPhone Fold, by the end of 2026, followed by new form factors in 2027 and 2028.
The upcoming iPhone Fold is rumored to feature a book-style design with a flexible LTPO+ OLED panel, roughly the size of an iPad mini. Apple is reportedly using a glass mid-frame structure to reduce display wrinkles, a common issue found in existing foldable phones. If true, this would mark Apple’s most significant design evolution since the introduction of the notch in 2017.
Following the foldable debut, Apple is expected to launch a bezel-less iPhone in 2027, coinciding with the brand’s 20th anniversary. This model will reportedly use a four-edge bending OLED display, achieving a truly edge-to-edge design.
It’s also rumored to feature a “Crater diffusion layer” that enhances brightness uniformity across the screen. In addition, Apple may finally integrate under-display Face ID, eliminating the need for visible sensors.
By 2028, the company could introduce another innovation — a clamshell-style foldable iPhone, informally referred to as the iPhone Flip. This model is expected to feature a compact, lightweight build with curved edges and a simple external display for quick access to notifications, AI shortcuts, and other essential functions.
While these leaks paint an exciting picture of Apple’s upcoming product lineup, the information remains speculative. The company is known for its secrecy around hardware development, and none of these details have been officially confirmed.
If accurate, Apple’s entry into the foldable market could reshape industry trends and challenge established players like Samsung, Google, and Oppo, all of whom have already made significant progress in the category.
