Apple’s touchscreen MacBook Pro could launch next month

Apple is reportedly preparing 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with OLED touchscreens, lighter designs and M6 chips.

Apple could finally be preparing to bring its long-rumoured touchscreen MacBook to market, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reporting that new MacBook Pro models featuring OLED touchscreens could launch as soon as next month.

The company is reportedly working on 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models equipped with OLED displays and touch functionality. The move would mark a significant change for Apple’s Mac lineup, which has traditionally relied on trackpads and external touch devices rather than touchscreen displays.

New MacBook Pro Models Could Be Lighter

While details about the upcoming laptops have already emerged through various reports, Gurman’s latest information suggests the new MacBook Pro models will be significantly lighter than their current-generation counterparts.

Apple has reportedly achieved the weight reduction through a redesigned internal component structure. The report does not specify exactly how much lighter the new machines will be, but the change could make the larger MacBook Pro models easier to carry without compromising their performance-focused design.

The redesigned internals could also help Apple accommodate the new OLED display technology while maintaining the laptop’s overall form factor.

M6 Chip and macOS 27.2 Expected

The upcoming MacBook Pro models are expected to be powered by Apple’s M6 chip, although Apple has yet to officially confirm the specifications of the new processors or the laptops.

According to the report, Apple is currently testing the touchscreen MacBook Pro models with macOS 27.2. This suggests the software is being prepared alongside the new hardware and could include improvements designed to support touchscreen interaction.

The move to touch-enabled OLED displays would give Apple an opportunity to introduce new interaction methods while retaining macOS as the primary operating system.

OLED Upgrade Also Coming to iPad Mini

The MacBook Pro is reportedly not the only Apple device receiving an OLED display upgrade.

Apple is also expected to introduce an OLED iPad mini, which is likely to retain the current 8.3-inch display size. There is currently no indication that Apple plans a major redesign for the compact tablet.

The touchscreen MacBook Pro remains unconfirmed by Apple, and its reported launch timeframe could change. If the November launch materialises, however, it would mark one of the most significant design changes to the MacBook Pro range in years.
