Danish international signs long-term contract until 2031 as Diego Simeone strengthens Atletico Madrid’s midfield options.
Atletico Madrid have officially announced the signing of Danish international midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP in a deal reportedly worth €40 million ($45.5 million).
The transfer marks another significant addition to Diego Simeone’s squad as the Spanish club continues to strengthen ahead of the new season.
The 27-year-old midfielder has signed a long-term contract that will keep him at Atletico Madrid until June 2031. Known for his leadership, defensive discipline, and ability to control the tempo of matches, Hjulmand is expected to play a key role in reinforcing Atletico’s midfield unit.
Hjulmand arrives in Madrid after an impressive three-year spell with Portuguese giants Sporting CP. During his time in Portugal, he established himself as one of the league’s standout midfielders and helped Sporting secure two Primeira Liga titles along with the Taca de Portugal.
His consistent performances also earned him recognition at the international level with the Danish national team.
The move reflects Atletico Madrid’s ambition to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for domestic and European honors.
Head coach Diego Simeone has been eager to add more strength and balance in midfield, and Hjulmand’s arrival is viewed as a strategic investment for the club’s future.
The Danish midfielder becomes Atletico Madrid’s second major signing of the summer transfer window, following the acquisition of Spanish left-back Alex Grimaldo. Both signings are expected to enhance the squad’s depth and quality as the club prepares for a demanding campaign.
While Atletico are strengthening in certain areas, the club could soon see departures as well. Argentine forward Thiago Almada is reportedly close to completing a move back to his homeland, with River Plate emerging as his likely destination.
Almada joined Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2025 and made 40 appearances for the club, scoring four goals. Despite often being used as a substitute, the Argentine contributed valuable moments during his time in Spain.
His expected exit would mark another change in Atletico’s evolving squad as Simeone continues to reshape the team for the future.
