Babar Azam nominated for ICC Player of the Month for May

Babar Azam, Pakistan’s cricket team captain, has been nominated for the ICC Player of the Month Awards for May. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has recognized Babar Azam’s exceptional performances during his team’s series victory over New Zealand in the ODI format.

This nomination adds to his impressive record as a productive batter and holder of the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy.

In the men’s international matches, the ICC Super League concluded, finalizing the teams that will participate in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe later this month. This announcement came through a press release issued on June 06, 2023.

On the women’s side, May witnessed several fixtures, including the clashes between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, as well as the Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia, where Thailand emerged victorious.

Najmul Hossain Shanto from Bangladesh has been shortlisted for the first time for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award.

He showcased an impressive run-scoring spree during his team’s triumph over Ireland. Another candidate for the award is Ireland’s Harry Tector, who displayed fine form despite his team’s loss against Bangladesh.

In the women’s category, Sri Lanka boasts two nominees for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for May. Captain Chamari Athapaththu led her team to a series of victories over Bangladesh in both ODI and T20I matches, delivering strong performances in both formats.

Harshitha Madavi, Athapaththu’s compatriot, also made significant contributions in both series, earning the Player of the Series title in the T20I matches. Thailand’s Thipoatcha Putthawong completes the lineup, aiming to follow in her teammate Naruemol Chaiwai’s footsteps after Chaiwai won the Player of the Month prize in April.

Putthawong’s bowling skills were instrumental in securing gold for Thailand at the Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh.

To determine the winners, the ICC will invite an independent Voting Academy and fans worldwide to cast their votes. The announcement of the winners is scheduled for next week.
