Bangladesh crush Zimbabwe to level Test series in Chattogram

Chattogram, April 30, 2025 – Bangladesh delivered a commanding performance to defeat Zimbabwe by an innings and 106 runs, leveling the two-match Test series 1-1 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

It was a resounding comeback by Bangladesh after their loss in the first Test in Sylhet, and a reminder of their strength at home, especially on spin-friendly tracks.

Zimbabwe had won the toss and opted to bat first, but their batting lineup once again failed to convert starts into substantial scores. From a strong position at 177/2, Zimbabwe collapsed to 227 all out, losing their last eight wickets for just 50 runs. Bangladesh’s spinners, led by Taijul Islam with a six-wicket haul, applied relentless pressure.

Bangladesh responded with a dominant batting display, anchored by Shadman Islam’s century and an all-important 104 by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Despite a brief fightback by Zimbabwe’s Vincent Masekesa, who claimed five wickets on debut, Bangladesh posted a 217-run lead. Mehidy’s partnerships with the tailenders proved crucial as he shepherded the lower order to a formidable total.

Zimbabwe’s second innings mirrored their earlier struggles. Though Craig Ervine and Ben Curran briefly resisted, the Bangladesh spin trio was too potent. Once Ervine departed, the collapse was swift, and Zimbabwe were bowled out well short, handing Bangladesh a massive win.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series for his remarkable all-round performance. He expressed pride in the team’s ability to bounce back and credited senior players like Mushfiqur Rahim and Taijul Islam for their guidance.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto praised the complete team effort and was especially pleased with the openers, Shadman and Anamul Haque. He acknowledged the struggles in Sylhet but said the team regrouped with determination.

Zimbabwe’s captain Craig Ervine admitted disappointment in his side’s inability to capitalize on strong starts. While Zimbabwe showed promise in Sylhet — winning their first Test since 2021 — they were outclassed in Chattogram. Ervine believes the lessons learned in Bangladesh will prepare them for tougher challenges ahead.

This series marks an important chapter for both teams. Zimbabwe now head to England for a one-off Test, while Bangladesh travel to Pakistan for a T20I series beginning May 25.
