Blistering heatwave engulfs Pakistan provinces till April 30, 2025

Islamabad, April 27, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning regarding extreme heat conditions gripping all provinces of the country, with temperatures expected to stay unusually high until April 30, 2025.

This extreme heatwave is affecting both the southern and northern parts of Pakistan, bringing with it potentially hazardous conditions for residents.

According to the PMD’s forecast, day temperatures in the southern regions of Pakistan, including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, are expected to remain 5 to 7°C above normal levels. In contrast, the upper provinces, including central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, will experience temperatures that are likely to be 4 to 6°C higher than the average.

The ongoing heatwave is primarily attributed to a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere, which is dominating the central and southern parts of the country. This system is expected to affect most regions until the end of the month, with no immediate relief in sight.

Weather Forecast for the Coming Days

Sunday: The weather will remain hot and dry across most provinces of Pakistan. The southern provinces, particularly Sindh and Balochistan, will experience exceptionally high temperatures.

Monday: As the heatwave persists, the provinces will continue to face hot and dry weather, with central and southern regions experiencing extreme heat conditions. The northern and higher altitude provinces, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, may experience somewhat milder conditions, but still warmer than usual.

Recent Temperature Readings

In the past 24 hours, most regions of Pakistan saw hot and dry conditions, with southern provinces bearing the brunt of the heat. Recorded maximum temperatures included Shaheed Benazirabad at a scorching 48°C, followed closely by Khairpur, Padidan, Sakrand, and Sibbi at 47°C. Other areas like Rohri, Jacobabad, Turbat, and Dadu recorded temperatures of 46°C.

The persistent heatwave poses a significant challenge for the residents of these provinces, particularly in urban centers and rural areas lacking adequate cooling infrastructure. The PMD has advised the public to take necessary precautions, including avoiding direct sunlight, staying hydrated, and following safety measures to prevent heat-related illnesses.
