Japanese regulator expels Hino on certification testing misconduct

JAPAN: Commercial Japan Partnership Technologies Corporation (CJPT) on Wednesday announced its decision to expel Hino Motors, Ltd on misconduct concerning certification testing.

Since its establishment in April 2021, CJPT has been working in the field with its partners to accelerate the spread of CASE, thereby aiming to contribute in achieving a carbon neutral society and reducing the burden on drivers and workers.

Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota), suggested that the misconduct committed by Hino is incompatible with CJPT’s aspirations and goals and that the continued inclusion of Hino in activities will not gain the understanding of its customers and the public.

With this suggestion taken into consideration, the decision was made after discussion within CJPT.

Specifically, Hino will be excluded from all agreements, including the joint planning agreement, and Hino’s equity stake (10 percent) in CJPT will be transferred to Toyota. In the projects that CJPT is currently working on, such as the previously announced social implementation in Fukushima and Tokyo, Hino will play a minimal role to not cause inconvenience to CJPT’s customers.

Comments by Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation

“As the parent company and a shareholder of Hino, we are extremely disappointed with the company’s misconduct in relation to the certification testing, which has greatly undermined the trust of our customers and all other stakeholders. Hino has committed misconduct in engine certification for a long period of time, and the company is in a situation where it is not to be recognized as one of the 5.5 million individuals in the Japanese automotive industry. CJPT is a project to build the future together, based on Japan’s CASE technology. As of now, we believe that Hino’s participation will cause inconvenience to stakeholders, and we have decided that it is appropriate to expel Hino from CJPT.

  • Amazon registers over 6,000 Pakistani sellers

Amazon registers over 6,000 Pakistani sellers

ISLAMABAD: Over 6,000 Pakistani sellers have been registered on Amazon platform, the leading global e-commerce giant, according to a press release issued on Tuesday.

This was revealed by Pakistani Ambassador to the United States Masood Khan in the press release issued from Washington DC.

He said that more than 6,000 sellers from Pakistan were registered last year on Amazon platforms after the leading global e-commerce giant opened seller registration for the country.

“This was a significant breakthrough for Pakistan providing much-needed international online business exposure to the country,” he continued.

“According to Amazon, these sellers have done good, steady business over the past few months. This is just a beginning, with a promise of huge expansion,” continued the Ambassador of Pakistan.

He said the volume of Amazon-supported businesses would grow exponentially with better networking and integration with US online platforms.

He was addressing a 35-member delegation of Washington Intergovernmental Professional Group (WIPG) who interacted with him at the Embassy on August 23, 2022.

WIPG helps professionals in maximizing their network, realizing their full potential and delivering value to various stakeholders. It also assists companies, associations and organizations to connect with the right kind of workforce to achieve organizational goals.

The delegation comprised former governor of Puerto Rico Luis Fortuno, WIPG President Nelson Garcia, economists, government officials, presidents and CEOs of corporations, entrepreneurs, investment fund managers, legal experts and diplomats.

The Ambassador said that better networking among Pak-US professionals, IT experts, businessmen, entrepreneurs and corporate leaders would create win-win solutions for the two countries and would help meet the growing needs of US economy.

“In past two decades, the two countries remained focused on tackling security issues in the region. These decades of lost economic and business opportunities for Pakistan need to be substituted with massive investment and commercial activities”, emphasized the Pakistan envoy.

Masood Khan said that with a 220 million population with its 100 million middle class, 130 million youth below the age of 30 years, 110 million mobile broadband subscribers and a tech savvy young human capital, Pakistan provides ideal conditions for the US investors and entrepreneurs to explore, invest and expand their businesses not only to Pakistan but to the Central Asia, West Asia, Middle East and North America.

Highlighting the remarkable growth of start-ups and tech sector in Pakistan during past few months, the Ambassador said that the tech sector of the country was taking off and poised to serve the entire region.

The Ambassador said that all efforts were being made to create strong linkages at all levels including government-to-government, business-to-business and most importantly people-to-people contacts.

Our diaspora, he said, is the most reliable and resilient connecting tissue binding the two countries and its people together.

We have to work together to further strengthen our partnerships in all possible areas including trade, investment, health, energy, climate change, green and renewable energy and agriculture.

The Ambassador thanked the Washington-based group for exploring ways to integrate Pak professionals with their peers in America.

Pakistan, he said, had a growing reservoir of a capable workforce. Later, the Ambassador responded to the questions of the participants about business opportunities in Pakistan, Pakistani exports to the US including rice and the security situation in South Asia.

  • Toyota launches new redesigned Sienta minivan

Toyota launches new redesigned Sienta minivan

JAPAN: Toyota Motor Corporation on Tuesday announced the launch of the new redesigned Sienta minivan.

The Sienta was launched in September 2003 as a vehicle that combines the convenience of a minivan, with a spacious cabin and seating for seven passengers, into a compact body size.

Each generation of the Sienta has provided solid support for family life by remaining consistently close to Japanese families and carrying a deep understanding of changing customer values from the very first generation. This consideration in design has earned driver loyalty and passenger admiration.

READ MORE: Toyota Motors suspends production at Tsutsumi plant

The press release issued by Toyota on August 23, 2022 stated that the development team once again considered customer feedback and tried to uncover their real hopes for the Sienta in developing this new model.

The conclusion they reached was preserving the vehicle’s easy-to-manage length, latest safety and security features, fuel economy, and affordable price while further refining the user-friendly cabin space preserved from the first generation.

The team has ensured a cabin space that seven adults can ride in without changing the length and width, making it a better companion that matches customer lifestyles.

The second-row seats, where most passengers sit, have been re-designed to provide more spacious rear seat space for both legroom and head clearance. In addition, the new Sienta adopts a revamped powertrain that achieves both fuel economy and driving performance through TNGA, as well as the latest safety and security features in support of family drives.

The consideration that has been added to the new Sienta will bring smiles to the faces of the whole family.

Details of the new third-generation Sienta are as follows.

Large side protection moldings honestly convey its functionality as a tool that can be used easily.

A total of seven body colors that blend into everyday life with the Sienta. Colors include Urban Khaki and a vivid Scarlet Metallic. In addition, Scarlet Metallic and Grayish Blue two-toned colors that match the dark gray roof color are also available.

Interior design that expands the fun of use and creates a comfortable cabin space

Simple “Shikakumaru” circle and square design. A design that evokes a sense of attachment has been pursued, with iconic, simple, and unified door pockets, cup holders, and registers.

Pictograms to suggest items that fit into the storage spaces in a fun way.

A thin, light, and horizontally arranged instrument panel made of fabric. Seamless connections from the front edge of the upper section to the left and right door belt lines support a sense of interior roominess and make it easy to judge the size

Three interior colors for a comfortable cabin. Color schemes include the bright Fromage and calm and relaxing Black. An easy-to-love Khaki is an available option as part of the Fan Tool Package.

User-friendly cabin space filled with innovations

Cabin height was increased by 20 mm from previous models while maintaining an easy-to-manage length and maneuverability. In addition, a low horizontal belt line and upright side glass design create a spacious and open interior

UV-block and IR-block functions are available as Comfort Package options for all windows around the cabin space, blocking IR and UV rays for a more comfortable space

A maximum of 1,000 mm, or +80 mm compared to previous models, of class-leading front/rear couple distance has been achieved to improve second-row comfort. Shopping baskets can be conveniently placed under seats for everyday shopping.

A ceiling air circulator has been installed for rear-seat comfort to efficiently circulate warm/cold air from the air conditioning unit to the rear seats, which eliminates the temperature difference between the front and rear seats

Sunshades for rear seats have been installed on sliding doors

While maintaining the popular low 330 mm floor height and stepless flat floor, the power sliding door opening height has been expanded to 1,200 mm, +60 mm compared to previous models, to make it easier to get in and out of rear seats. All family members, from children to the elderly, can easily get in and out of the vehicle.

The rear hatch door opening height has been increased by 15 mm compared to previous models. Luggage space height has also been increased by 20 mm compared to previous models, allowing for smoother loading and unloading. A bicycle with 27-inch tires can be loaded without the handlebars getting stuck in the opening, so, for example, parents can pick up their children with bicycles after cram school in a sudden rain storm.

In addition to the floor luggage space, the two-row five-seater model has expanded luggage space height by 50 mm compared to previous models, which was achieved by changing the tilt-down structure of the second-row seats to lower the height of the back of the seats when folded. The flat, large-capacity luggage space is ideal for active situations such as outdoor activities where a large amount of cargo is loaded.

    Other innovations

Sienta has fabric seat covers with deodorizing and water/oil-repellent treatment for more convenience and easier cleaning up after food or drink spills. Enhanced storage space full of ideas for ease of use.

Two driver’s seat-back smartphone pockets (with two USB-C ports for charging), etc.

Advanced features for a safe, secure, comfortable, and convenient drive

    Toyota Safety Sense

Toyota Safety Sense, the latest active safety package with advanced and improved functionality, is equipped as standard on all models. The range of accidents that can be responded to has been expanded to support safe driving further.

    Pre-collision Safety System
This system expands the detection range, adding motorcyclists (daytime), pedestrians, and cyclists to help avoid collisions or reduce damage. It provides additional support at intersections where accidents more frequently occur.

    Proactive Driving Assist
This system subtly assists drivers when driving on ordinary roads and in other situations. It supports avoidance steering and deceleration to avoid getting too close to pedestrians, cyclists, and parked vehicles by anticipating risks according to the driving situation, such as pedestrians crossing the road or vehicles that may suddenly start moving.

The new Sienta comes equipped with Advanced Park, a driving support technology function within Toyota Teammate. Besides support of all operations―steering, acceleration, braking, and gear changes―the bird’s-eye view display also shows the ideal steering wheel positions for a safe and secure parking experience. This system expands support in parallel parking situations. In addition to backing in/forward exit from parking situations, it also supports forward entry/backing exit parking situations for improved ease of use when parking.

    Software Update

Software updates enable the vehicle to always have the latest software version via wireless communication or a dealer’s wired connection. While also adding new functions that become available after vehicle purchase, the updates can enhance vehicle performance. Installation of the latest driver-assistance technologies can help the vehicle evolve in terms of greater safety and peace of mind.

    Comprehensive T-Connect optional services

Equipped with Connected Navigation-compatible Display Audio system, enabling destination searches and route settings using new center-acquired data, including maps, facilities, and traffic congestion. A voice-recognition service (agent) can also set destinations in the system.

These new models also come with their own in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot, a first for Toyota. The DCM included as standard on all these models enables unlimited data transfer for smartphones, game devices, and other devices connected to the internet.

Other enhanced equipment for a safe, secure, comfortable, and convenient drive

Equipped with front and rear dash cams. Video captured by the Toyota Safety Sense’s monocular camera and the newly added rear-facing camera while driving is recorded to built-in memory. For portability, video data can be played back on the Display Audio system or transferred to a smartphone or USB memory device.

Equipped with an AC100 V/1,500 W accessory power outlet. This not only allows the use of electrical products using the same electrical outlets found in the home but also enables the vehicle to be used as a power generator during blackouts and other times of emergency.

    Earth-friendly and exceptional basic functions

    Body and suspension

The platform that forms the vehicle’s basic structure was newly designed based on the TNGA (GA-B) platform. The main structure is joined to form a ring-shaped frame, improving joint rigidity. The highly rigid body is light and well-balanced to deliver high-quality riding comfort and outstanding handling stability.

Handling stability, ride comfort, and quietness have been improved by using a high-damping type of structural adhesive for the vehicle’s main structure and a portion of the mastic sealer used for the roof panel.

Front and rear suspension geometry has been optimized to produce a rigid body. With MacPherson struts at the front and torsion beam at the rear, a suspension system that creates gentle movement and a smooth ride with excellent road holding has been achieved.

The minimum turning radius is just 5.0 m, facilitating smooth maneuvers on narrow roads and in car parks.

Date to unveil Apple’s iPhone 14

Apple is likely to unveil its iPhone 14 in the first week of September 2022. Reports suggest that the company may launch the product on September 7, 2022.

According to Bloomberg.com, it would be the earliest iPhone launch since 2016 and be followed by the new device going on sale September 16—about a week ahead of last year’s schedule.

The event will be on the Wednesday after Labor Day, an atypical day for Apple product launches. It signals that the company wanted to leave that Tuesday free. Why? Perhaps because press and other guests will need a travel day after the Monday holiday.

On July 28, 2022, Apple announced financial results for its fiscal 2022 third quarter ended June 25, 2022. The company posted a June quarter revenue record of $83.0 billion, up 2 percent year over year, and quarterly earnings per diluted share of $1.20.

“This quarter’s record results speak to Apple’s constant efforts to innovate, to advance new possibilities, and to enrich the lives of our customers,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.

“As always, we are leading with our values, and expressing them in everything we build, from new features that are designed to protect user privacy and security, to tools that will enhance accessibility, part of our longstanding commitment to create products for everyone.”

“Our June quarter results continued to demonstrate our ability to manage our business effectively despite the challenging operating environment. We set a June quarter revenue record and our installed base of active devices reached an all-time high in every geographic segment and product category,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO. “During the quarter, we generated nearly $23 billion in operating cash flow, returned over $28 billion to our shareholders, and continued to invest in our long-term growth plans.”

Apple’s board of directors has declared a cash dividend of $0.23 per share of the Company’s common stock.

Customers who are experienced with the complexities of repairing electronic devices will be able to complete repairs on these Mac notebooks, with access to many of the same parts and tools available to Apple Store locations and Apple Authorized Service Providers.

To start the Self Service Repair process, a customer will first review the repair manual for the product they want to repair by visiting support.apple.com/self-service-repair. Then, they can visit the Apple Self Service Repair Store and order the necessary parts and tools.

Every genuine Apple part is designed and engineered for each product, and goes through extensive testing to ensure the highest quality, safety, and reliability. Customers can send replaced parts back to Apple for refurbishment and recycling, and in many cases receive credit of their purchase by doing so.

The Apple tools are custom designed to help provide the best repairs for Apple products, and are engineered to withstand the rigors of high-volume, professional repair operations where safety and reliability are the utmost priority. Apple will offer rental kits for $49, so that customers who do not want to purchase tools for a single repair still have access to these professional repair tools. Customers will have access to the tool kit for one week and it will be shipped free of charge.

Self Service Repair is part of Apple’s efforts to further expand access to repairs. For the vast majority of customers who do not have experience repairing electronic devices, visiting a professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair.

Over the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and training, including more than 3,500 Independent Repair Providers.

A global network of more than 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers supports more than 100,000 active technicians. As a result, in the US, eight out of 10 Apple customers are located within 20 minutes of an authorized service provider.

Porsche launches new Porsche 911 GT3 RS

GERMANY: Porsche on Thursday revealed its all new Porsche 911 GT3 RS which is designed for maximum performance.

The road-legal high-performance sports car takes full advantage of technology and concepts from motorsport (911 GT3 RS: Fuel consumption combined (WLTP) 13.4 l/100 km, CO₂ emissions combined (WLTP) 305 g/km, Fuel consumption combined (NEDC) 12.7 l/100 km, CO₂ emissions combined (NEDC) 289 g/km). Even beyond the high-revving naturally aspirated engine with racing DNA and intelligent lightweight construction, it is, above all, the cooling and aerodynamic systems of the 911 GT3 RS that connect it most directly with its motorsport brother, the 911 GT3 R.

Central-radiator concept inspired by motorsport – the foundation for active aerodynamics

The basis for a significant performance boost is the concept of a central radiator – an idea that was first used in the Le Mans class-winning 911 RSR and subsequently in the 911 GT3 R. Instead of the three-radiator layout seen in previous cars, the new 911 GT3 RS relies on a large, angled centre radiator in the car’s nose, positioned where the luggage compartment is located on other 911 models. This has made it possible to use the space freed up on the sides to integrate active aerodynamic elements.

Continuously adjustable wing elements in the front and on the two-part rear wing, in combination with a number of other aerodynamic measures, provide 409 kg of total downforce at 200 km/h. This means that the new 911 GT3 RS generates twice as much downforce as its 991.2-generation predecessor and three times as much as a current 911 GT3. At 285 km/h, total downforce is 860 kg.

A drag reduction system (DRS) is fitted in a production Porsche for the first time. To achieve low drag and higher speeds on straight sections of the track, the DRS allows the wings to be flattened out at the push of a button, within a specific operating range. The airbrake function is activated during emergency braking at high speeds: the wing elements at the front and rear are set to maximum, creating an aerodynamic deceleration effect that significantly supports the wheel brakes.

The look of the new 911 GT3 RS is characterised by the large number of functional aerodynamic elements. The most prominent feature of the GT sports car is the swan-neck-supported rear wing, which is significantly larger in all dimensions. The rear wing consists of a fixed main wing and an upper, hydraulically adjustable wing element.

For the first time on a Porsche production vehicle, the upper edge of the rear wing is higher than the car’s roof. In addition, the front end of the 911 GT3 RS no longer has a front spoiler, but instead features a front splitter that divides the air flowing over and underneath. Sideblades accurately direct air outwards. Front wheel arch ventilation is provided via louvred openings in the front wings.

Inlets behind the front wheels, in the style of the iconic Le Mans-winning 911 GT1, reduce the dynamic pressure in the wheel arches. Sideblades behind the intake ensure that the air is directed to the side of the vehicle. Air from the centrally positioned radiator flows out via large nostrils on the front lid. Fins on the roof direct the air outwards, ensuring cooler intake temperatures in the rear.

In the new 911 GT3 RS, the openings in the rear side panel are used exclusively to improve aerodynamics and not to draw in process air. The rear wheel arch also features an intake and a sideblade for optimised airflow. The rear diffuser comes from the 911 GT3 and has been slightly adapted.

Track suspension that can be adjusted from the cockpit

Even the suspension comes in for aerodynamic attention. Because the wheel arches of the new 911 GT3 RS are subject to powerful airflows, the components of the double-wishbone front axle are designed with teardrop-shaped profiles. These aerodynamically efficient links increase downforce on the front axle by around 40 kg at top speed and are otherwise only used in high-end motorsport applications. Because of the wider track (29 millimetres wider than the 911 GT3), the double-wishbone front axle links are also correspondingly longer.

To ensure that the downforce balance between the front and rear axles is maintained even when braking from high speeds, the suspension engineers have significantly reduced pitching under braking. On the new 911 GT3 RS, the front ball joint of the lower trailing arm has been set lower on the front axle. The multi-link rear axle has also been adjusted, with modified spring rates. The driver assistance systems and rear-axle steering also have an even more dynamic set-up here.

The 911 GT3 RS offers three driving modes: Normal, Sport and Track. In Track mode, the basic settings can be individually adjusted. Among other settings, the rebound and compression damping of the front and rear axles can be adjusted separately and in several stages. The rear differential can also be adjusted via rotary controls on the steering wheel. This is done quickly and intuitively with an operating and display concept also borrowed from motorsport.

Four individual rotary controls and a button for the Drag Reduction System (DRS) are located on the steering wheel. These rotary controls are clearly displayed via graphics in the instrument cluster during the adjustment process. The 911 GT3 RS also features the track screen already familiar from the 911 GT3. At the touch of a button, the driver can reduce the digital displays on the two seven-inch side displays to essential information only. The gearshift indicators to the left and right of the analogue tachometer have also been taken from the GT3.

High-revving four liter six-cylinder boxer engine

The 4.0-litre high-revving naturally aspirated engine has been further optimised compared with the 911 GT3. The increase in power to 386 kW (525 PS) is achieved primarily via new camshafts with modified cam profiles. The single-throttle intake system and the rigid valve drive are derived from motorsport. The seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) has a shorter overall gear ratio than the 911 GT3. Air intakes on the underbody ensure that the transmission can withstand even extreme loads during frequent use on track. The 911 GT3 RS accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 296 km/h in seventh gear.

Aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes with six pistons each and brake discs with a diameter of 408 mm are used on the front axle. Compared with the 911 GT3, the piston diameters have been increased from 30 to 32 mm. In addition, the thickness of the discs has been increased from 34 to 36 mm. The rear axle continues to be fitted with 380-mm brake discs and four-piston fixed-calliper brakes.

The optionally available Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) has 410-mm discs on the front axle and 390-mm discs on the rear axle. The new 911 GT3 RS comes standard with forged light-alloy centre-lock wheels. Road-legal sports tyres measuring 275/35 R 20 at the front and 335/30 R21 at the rear ensure a high level of mechanical grip.

    Lightweight construction all the way

Intelligent lightweight construction has been a basic principle of all RS models ever since the legendary 911 Carrera RS 2.7. Thanks to an array of lightweight construction measures such as the extensive use of CFRP, the 911 GT3 RS weighs in at only 1,450 kg (kerb weight according to DIN) despite many larger components. The doors, front wings, roof and front lid, for example, are made from CFRP. Lightweight CFRP is also used in the interior, for example in the standard full bucket seats.

Available with Clubsport and Weissach packages

When it comes to its interior, the new GT sports car is finished in typical RS style: black leather, Racetex and carbon-weave finish characterise the purist, sporting ambience. The 911 GT3 RS is available with the Clubsport package at no extra cost. This includes a steel rollover bar, a hand-held fire extinguisher and six-point seat belts for the driver.

The Weissach package, which is available at extra cost, involves considerably more. The front lid, roof, parts of the rear wing and the upper shell of the exterior mirrors feature a carbon-weave finish. The front and rear anti-roll bars, the rear coupling rods and the shear panel on the rear axle are made of CFRP and contribute to a further enhancement of the driving dynamics. The rollover bar, constructed for the first time from CFRP, saves around six kilograms compared with the steel version.

Another highlight of the Weissach package is the PDK shift paddles with motorsport-derived magnet technology. This makes gear changes even more dynamic thanks to a more precise pressure point and a clearly perceptible click. Optionally available with the Weissach package are magnesium forged wheels, which save another eight kilograms.

    Exclusive Porsche Design Chronograph

Inspired by the motorsport mindset – where maximum precision is paramount – Porsche’s own watchmaking operation in Solothurn, Switzerland, has developed the 911 GT3 RS chronograph. This mechanical watch is reserved for owners of the car. It is based on a glass-bead blasted case, made from either natural or black titanium, and with a screw-down crown. Inside the watch is the mechanical Porsche Design chronograph calibre WERK 01.200, which has been COSC-certified for its high accuracy.

Its flyback function allows the wearer to start, stop and reset the second hand with a single action. The chronograph pushers, which feature ‘Start/Stop’ and ‘Next Lap’ laser engravings, reveal that this chronograph is not just about telling the time. In addition to innovations, such as the pulsometer scale on the bezel, many design features and materials from the GT3 RS are also found.

The new 911 GT3 RS is available for order now and starts at €229,517 in Germany.
