Coventry City are set to bolster their attack with Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi in a deal worth around £17 million.
Coventry City have reached an agreement worth approximately £17 million to sign Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi as they prepare for their long-awaited return to the Premier League.
The Sky Blues are expected to finalise the transfer ahead of their opening Premier League fixture against Arsenal on Friday. The move would give manager Frank Lampard another experienced attacking option as Coventry prepare to compete in the top flight for the first time in 25 years.
Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022 for a reported £17.2 million fee, becoming the club’s record signing at the time. The Nigeria international has since made 103 appearances for Forest and scored 23 goals.
However, the 28-year-old has struggled to secure regular first-team football following the emergence of Chris Wood and the arrival of Igor Jesus. His opportunities were further limited last season, when he was left out of Forest’s Europa League squad and managed only three starts.
Across 17 appearances in all competitions during that campaign, Awoniyi scored four goals. A move to Coventry could now provide him with an opportunity to revive his career and play a more prominent role.
The striker also faced a major health setback in May 2025 after suffering a ruptured intestine during Forest’s match against Leicester City. He was subsequently placed in an induced coma as part of his treatment before beginning his recovery.
Coventry have already been active in strengthening their squad ahead of the new campaign. The club brought Gus Hamer back from Sheffield United and re-signed goalkeeper Carl Rushworth after his successful loan spell from Brighton.
The Sky Blues have also added winger Loum Tchaouna from Burnley, defender Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt and Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi from Nordsjaelland.
With Haji Wright currently sidelined through injury, Awoniyi could provide valuable attacking depth alongside Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ellis Simms. His Premier League experience could also prove important as Coventry begin their first top-flight season in a quarter of a century.
