Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud claimed nine wickets as Bangladesh secured a historic nine-wicket victory over Australia in Marrara.
Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud has etched his name alongside Pakistan legend Wasim Akram after producing an outstanding performance in his first Test appearance in Australia.
His nine-wicket match haul placed him among an exclusive group of visiting bowlers who have recorded the best figures on their maiden Test outing Down Under.
The 26-year-old pacer played a key role in Bangladesh’s memorable nine-wicket victory over Australia at Marrara Stadium on Sunday. His devastating opening-innings spell helped Bangladesh seize control of the match and maintain pressure on the hosts throughout the contest.
Mahmud finished the first innings with figures of 6/55 from 17 overs, dismantling Australia’s batting order as the hosts were bowled out for 198 in 53 overs. Steven Smith led Australia’s scoring with 71 from 109 deliveries, while Mahmud’s pace attack restricted the rest of the lineup.
Bangladesh responded strongly, posting 426 in 138 overs and establishing a commanding 228-run advantage. Tanzid Hasan was the standout batter, making 101 from 197 balls, including eight fours and a six.
Australia fought back in their second innings, reaching 284 before being dismissed in 95.1 overs. Cameron Green produced a determined century, scoring 104 from 201 balls, while Smith added 44 and Marnus Labuschagne contributed 31.
However, Bangladesh’s bowling attack again proved decisive. Mehidy Hasan Miraz claimed 5/66 in 33.1 overs, while Mahmud added three more wickets to complete nine dismissals in the match.
The performance placed Mahmud third on the list of visiting bowlers with the best match figures in their first Test in Australia. Wasim Akram remains at the top after taking 11/160 for Pakistan in 1990, followed by England’s Maurice Tate, who recorded 11/128 in 1924. Mahmud’s 9/111 now ranks third.
Needing only 57 runs to secure victory, Bangladesh completed the chase in 14.2 overs with one wicket down. Mominul Haque finished unbeaten on 30, while Shadman Islam scored 25 to complete a landmark nine-wicket triumph and give Bangladesh a historic victory on Australian soil.
