CPEC Hydropower Project Begins Wet Testing in Pakistan

The first unit of the China-built Suki Kinari Hydropower project in northwest Pakistan has commenced wet testing, marking a significant milestone under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The unit was successfully started up on Sunday, signaling that the project is in its final sprint stage towards full operation and power generation under CPEC.

Cheng Dan, general manager of China Energy Construction Overseas Investment Company Ltd., which is responsible for the investment and implementation of the project, shared with Xinhua that the first unit has smoothly passed a series of initial tests, meeting all design requirements. Cheng mentioned that the unit will undergo numerous additional tests, including a temperature stability test, to ensure all technical indicators align with the design standards.

The Suki Kinari Hydropower project is located in the Mansehra district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Construction began in January 2017, and once the project becomes fully functional later this year, it is expected to generate approximately 3.21 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually. This output will replace 1.28 million tons of coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2.52 million tons each year, as stated by Cheng. Moreover, the project will effectively address 20 percent of Pakistan’s electricity deficit, providing a substantial boost to the country’s energy resources.

On June 16, 2024, Chinese and Pakistani engineers celebrated the commencement of wet testing for the first unit of the Suki Kinari Hydropower Project under the CPEC. This achievement highlights the strong collaboration between the two nations under the CPEC initiative and brings the project one significant step closer to becoming operational.

The wet testing phase is crucial for ensuring the hydropower unit’s reliability and efficiency before it begins full-scale operations. Engineers will meticulously evaluate various aspects of the unit’s performance, including its response to different operational conditions and its overall stability. These tests are designed to confirm that the hydropower unit can operate smoothly and safely, delivering the expected amount of electricity to the grid.

The Suki Kinari Hydropower Project is a testament to the growing cooperation between China and Pakistan, aiming to enhance the latter’s energy infrastructure and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.
