Dense Fog Alert: Islamabad Braces for Chilled Friday on Jan 26

Islamabad, January 25, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather alert predicting the onset of dense fog in Islamabad on Friday, January 26, 2024.

The warning encompasses the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh, urging citizens to exercise caution due to the potential visibility issues.

The PMD highlighted that the persistence of dense fog is attributed to continuously low daytime temperatures, creating very cold weather conditions in the affected areas. Commuters and residents are advised to take extra precautions and adhere to safety guidelines during this period of reduced visibility.

Regarding the synoptic situation, the PMD reported that continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country, with a shallow westerly wave expected to impact upper regions. The weather forecast for Friday anticipates very cold and dry conditions in most areas, with upper districts and north Balochistan experiencing partly cloudy weather. Additionally, isolated places in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may witness light rain, accompanied by light snowfall over mountainous regions.

The PMD’s assessment for Thursday, January 25, 2024, indicated mainly very cold and partly cloudy weather in most parts of the country. Nighttime forecasts included expectations of light rain and light snowfall over mountains in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The persistent dense fog and smog in Islamabad, the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh contributed to very cold weather conditions in these regions.

Over the past 24 hours, cold and dry weather prevailed over most parts of the country, with northern areas and north Balochistan experiencing very cold temperatures. Dense fog and smog were reported in Islamabad, the Pothohar region, plain areas of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh.

Recorded Lowest Minimum Temperatures (°C) for today included Skardu at -10, Leh at -09, Astore, Kalam, Gilgit at -06, Srinagar, Bunji at -04, Chitral, Dir, Hunza, Malamjabba Mirkhani, and Rawalakot at -03.

As dense fog and chilly temperatures persist, the public is advised to stay updated on weather conditions and take necessary precautions while commuting. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in the affected areas.
