Duplantis, Tsegay Achieve Historic World Records at Diamond League Final

Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay and Sweden’s Armand Duplantis etched their names into the record books at the Diamond League final held in Eugene, Oregon, on September 17.

Armand Duplantis, the reigning pole vault world and Olympic champion, reached unprecedented heights with remarkable ease. On his very first attempt, he effortlessly soared over the bar at an astonishing height of 6.23 meters.

This remarkable accomplishment marked Duplantis’s seventh world record-breaking performance, with this being his second in an outdoor setting.

Reflecting on his extraordinary achievement, Duplantis humbly remarked, “The sky’s the limit, and I hope to continue improving my jumps. Right now, though, I’m savoring this moment and relishing what I’ve just accomplished.”

Duplantis also emphasized the advantages of the Diamond League final format, saying, “The condensed competition format of the Diamond League final suits me well for world record attempts. It’s a shorter event, making it easier to maintain peak performance at world-record heights.”

Meanwhile, Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia left an indelible mark on the world of athletics by obliterating the women’s 5,000-meter world record. Tsegay’s blistering pace resulted in a jaw-dropping time of 14 minutes and 00.21 seconds for the race.

Her unwavering focus on breaking the world record bore fruit, and she expressed her elation at achieving this feat after missing out on the title in Budapest due to leg injuries.

In addition to these extraordinary record-breaking performances, the Diamond League Final witnessed other outstanding achievements. Shericka Jackson of Jamaica successfully defended her women’s 200-meter title, clocking an impressive 21.57 seconds, just a day after winning the 100 meters in 10.70 seconds.

Olympic champion Andre De Grasse of Canada delivered a season-best performance in the men’s 200 meters, finishing in 19.76 seconds.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine captivated spectators with a world-leading high jump of 2.03 meters, while Jamaican Hansle Parchment set a world-leading time of 12.93 seconds in the men’s 110-meter hurdles.
