Google Gemini Introduces Secure Sharing Features for Workspace Users

IT & Telecom

Google has announced new sharing capabilities for Gemini within Google Workspace, allowing users to securely share AI chats, canvases, and generated content through Google Drive. The update comes as Google works to improve the Gemini experience following recent criticism surrounding reduced usage limits and confusion over its AI Ultra subscription plans.

The new feature is designed to make collaboration easier for businesses and teams while offering stronger security controls compared to Gemini’s existing public link-sharing system.

Gemini Chats Can Now Be Shared Through Google Drive

According to Google, Workspace users will soon be able to share Gemini conversations and AI-generated projects directly using Google Drive’s built-in sharing technology. The company says the interface will feel familiar since it uses the same sharing system already available across Google Drive products.

The shared content will function as a snapshot of the conversation at the time it is shared. Any edits or changes made by recipients will happen in separate chats and will not affect the original Gemini conversation.

This feature could become especially useful for workplace collaboration. Teams can quickly share AI-generated ideas, product launch strategies, project plans, and brainstorming sessions while keeping discussions organized and secure.

Improved Security and Access Controls

Google emphasized that the new Drive-based sharing system offers improved privacy and security compared to Gemini’s current public link-sharing method, where anyone with the link can access the conversation.

With Google Drive integration, Gemini assets will now follow the same access control settings available for Drive files and documents. Organizations will be able to manage permissions, restrict access, and control who can view or interact with shared AI content.

Google also confirmed that Workspace administrators can disable the feature through the Admin console if needed. Additionally, admins can independently manage Gemini sharing settings and Drive sharing permissions.

Rollout Timeline for Gemini Sharing Features

The company stated that the new sharing tools are enabled by default and will automatically follow an organization’s existing Drive sharing policies.

If a company already allows public sharing for Google Drive assets, Gemini-generated content will also inherit those settings automatically.

Google says the rollout for administrators begins today and should complete within the next few days. End-users are expected to start receiving access from June 3, provided the feature has been enabled by their Workspace administrators.

The company added that it may take between one and three days for all users to see the changes appear in their accounts.
