Government Sets Sugar Price at Rs 130 for Ramadan

Islamabad, February 15, 2025 – The Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, has officially announced that the price of sugar will be set at Rs 130 per kilogram across the country during the holy month of Ramadan.

This decision comes as part of the government’s initiative to ensure affordable access to essential commodities for the public during this sacred period.

The announcement was made during a meeting of the Sugar Advisory Board held in Lahore. Chaired by Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, the meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from sugar mills, provincial authorities, and consumer protection bodies. The primary focus of the meeting was to finalize measures for stabilizing sugar prices and ensuring an uninterrupted supply throughout Ramadan.

Minister Hussain stressed the critical importance of making sugar available at reasonable rates, particularly when demand typically surges during the fasting month. He declared that sugar would be sold at designated stalls set up by sugar mills nationwide, priced at Rs 130 per kilogram. These stalls will provide sugar in convenient 1-2 kg packages, allowing each customer to purchase up to 5 kg upon presenting their national identity card.

To facilitate smooth distribution, the minister directed authorities to commence stall operations three days before the start of Ramadan. The sugar stalls will remain operational until the 27th of Ramadan, ensuring that consumers can easily access their required quantities without any supply disruptions.

During the meeting, Minister Hussain highlighted the need for stringent oversight to prevent hoarding and price manipulation in the sugar market. He instructed relevant officials to work closely with district administrations, the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA), and cane commissioners to maintain an efficient and transparent distribution process.

Additionally, he recommended expanding the number of sugar stalls and establishing them at the municipal committee level across all districts. This strategic move aims to enhance accessibility, especially in densely populated urban areas.

Minister Hussain assured the public that he, along with provincial chief secretaries, would personally monitor the situation to guarantee the plan’s effective implementation. “Sugar is a vital household commodity, particularly during Ramadan. We are committed to ensuring its availability at an affordable price to ease the burden on citizens during this blessed month,” he stated.

The government’s proactive approach, including strict market monitoring and efficient logistics, is expected to stabilize sugar prices and prevent artificial shortages, providing much-needed relief to consumers across Pakistan.
