Rockstar Games has showcased 26 minutes of gameplay, highlighting Lucia and Jason, stunning visuals and the world of Leonida.
Rockstar Games has finally given fans an extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6, more than 18 months after the game’s last official footage was released.
The 26-minute preview initially debuted on Netflix before being released on YouTube several hours later, giving players their most detailed look yet at the highly anticipated sequel. The footage was presented without commentary or explanatory captions, instead focusing on gameplay, characters, environments, vehicle chases and shootouts.
The showcase arrived shortly after a series of unauthorised GTA 6 gameplay leaks surfaced online. Rockstar previously described the spread of the leaked material as a heartbreaking experience for the development team.
GTA 6 focuses on Jason and Lucia
One of the biggest highlights of the extended preview was the relationship between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, the two protagonists at the centre of GTA 6’s story.
The pair have been described as having a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style relationship, with their partnership playing an important role in the game’s narrative. Rockstar has indicated that players’ actions can influence how their relationship develops.
The preview also demonstrated the ability to switch between Jason and Lucia during certain sections of the game. In one sequence, Jason helps Lucia escape from an apartment building by lowering her through a window during a drug-related incident.
The character-switching mechanic follows the approach used in GTA 5, although that game featured three playable protagonists.
Rockstar pushes visual quality
The latest footage also showcased the game’s highly detailed graphics, with fans praising its realistic character models, facial animations and environments.
The preview featured apartment interiors, rooftop bars, underground clubs and various other locations across Leonida, the fictional state inspired by Florida.
Players will also return to Vice City, the Miami-inspired setting that previously appeared in the 2002 title Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Background characters appeared with a wider range of body shapes and appearances, while the overall level of environmental detail suggested a significant technical leap over Rockstar’s previous games.
Reports have also suggested that GTA 6’s map could be substantially larger than GTA 5’s. However, Rockstar has yet to officially confirm claims that the new map is twice the size of its predecessor.
Classic GTA gameplay remains
Despite its visual upgrades, GTA 6 remains firmly rooted in the series’ traditional formula.
The extended footage featured armed robberies, high-speed car chases, criminal activities and interactions with the game’s colourful cast of characters. Rockstar’s trademark satire and dark humour also remain prominent.
The game also appears to build on gameplay systems introduced in Red Dead Redemption 2, including mechanics that could influence how characters perceive the player.
GTA 6 Online remains unconfirmed
Rockstar has previously confirmed that GTA 6 will launch as a single-player experience, but the company has yet to provide details about a potential online mode.
That leaves GTA Online fans waiting for information about the sequel’s multiplayer plans. GTA Online became a major commercial success following the launch of GTA 5 and generated substantial long-term revenue for Rockstar.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, and expectations remain extremely high following the latest gameplay reveal.
