Peshawar, August 21, 2024 – Federal Health Secretary Nadeem Mahbub conducted a visit to Peshawar Airport on Wednesday to assess the ongoing surveillance measures aimed at preventing the spread of Monkeypox (Mpox) in Pakistan. His visit underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health amid increasing concerns about the virus.
Upon arrival, the Federal Health Secretary met with officials from the Civil Aviation Authority, as well as doctors and medical personnel stationed at the airport. The discussions focused on the essential health protocols currently in place to prevent the potential entry of Mpox into the country.
The Border Health Services team provided a comprehensive briefing on the preventive measures being implemented at the airport. These measures include the systematic screening of incoming travelers, an initiative that is part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to control the spread of Mpox. The Health Secretary expressed satisfaction with the current situation, stating, “The situation regarding Mpox in Pakistan is satisfactory.”
Nadeem Mahbub emphasized the importance of maintaining a vigilant approach, highlighting the advanced screening system at airports that utilizes thermal scanners. This system aligns with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and is designed to detect any signs of Mpox among incoming travelers. He further mentioned that training for health workers is already underway, ensuring they are well-prepared to handle any potential threats effectively.
“The health protocols at our airports are crucial in our fight against Mpox, and I personally visited to ensure that the arrangements are being executed as planned,” the Secretary stated. He assured that the Ministry of Health is continually monitoring the situation, with the Border Health Services staff actively engaged in the screening process.
Nadeem Mahbub also reiterated the Ministry of Health’s commitment to rigorously enforce all preventive measures against Mpox. With these strategies in place, Pakistan aims to maintain public health safety, even as international travel continues amid global concerns about the virus.
The Health Secretary’s visit is part of a broader effort by the government to reassure the public that necessary precautions are being taken at entry points across the country. As global travel remains a key factor in the spread of Mpox, the continued vigilance and proactive measures at airports like Peshawar are essential to ensuring the virus does not gain a foothold in Pakistan.
