Lorcan Tucker’s captain’s knock and disciplined bowling help Ireland stun T20 world champions India by 34 runs in the series opener.
Ireland registered a landmark victory over India, defeating the reigning T20 world champions by 34 runs in the opening match of the two-match T20I series on Friday. The memorable triumph in Belfast marked Ireland’s first-ever win against India across all formats of international cricket.
Opting to bat first, Ireland overcame an early setback after slipping to 30/3. Captain Lorcan Tucker led the recovery with a composed half-century, while Gareth Delany played an equally vital role, smashing 49 runs from just 32 deliveries. Their partnership revived the innings and laid the foundation for a competitive total of 182/9 in the allotted 20 overs.
Ireland accelerated brilliantly in the closing stages, collecting 46 runs during the 16th and 17th overs to put significant pressure on the Indian bowling attack. Despite the late assault, Harshit Rana impressed with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 24 runs. Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel also made useful contributions by taking two wickets each.
India, however, failed to match Ireland’s intensity during the chase. The visitors struggled to build partnerships and were eventually bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs, handing Ireland a famous victory.
Abhishek Sharma emerged as India’s standout batter, producing a quickfire 49 off only 20 balls to keep the chase alive briefly. However, the rest of the highly-rated batting lineup was unable to cope with Ireland’s disciplined bowling performance.
Left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys starred with three wickets, while Matt Hollard also picked up three scalps to dismantle India’s middle order. Debutant Jai Moondra enjoyed an impressive international debut, returning figures of 2/25 from his four-over spell to cap a memorable outing for the hosts.
Meanwhile, teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who recently earned his maiden India call-up, did not feature in the playing XI. The team management retained the opening combination that guided India to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title earlier this year.
With a 1-0 lead in the series, Ireland will now aim to complete a clean sweep when the two sides meet again in the second and final T20I on Sunday. India, meanwhile, will be eager to bounce back and avoid a rare bilateral series defeat against the spirited Irish side.
