Islamabad braces for rain and windstorm over weekend: PMD

Islamabad, May 10, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather forecast indicating the likelihood of rain and windstorm activity in Islamabad during the upcoming weekly holidays, specifically on Saturday and Sunday (May 10–11, 2025).

The advisory comes amid shifting synoptic conditions that are expected to bring unstable weather to the region.

For Saturday, PMD predicts predominantly dry weather in Islamabad and its surrounding areas. However, isolated locations in the capital may experience partly cloudy conditions accompanied by a windstorm or thunderstorm with light rain during the afternoon hours. The probability of this weather occurrence is around 30 percent.

On Sunday, a similar pattern is expected. While dry weather will prevail for most of the day, the evening or night may bring partly cloudy skies along with windstorm and thunderstorm-related rain in isolated parts of Islamabad. The forecast suggests a 40 percent chance of precipitation coupled with gusty winds.

This will be the third windstorm warning in Islamabad this month alone, prompting concern for potential disruptions. The PMD has also issued a general weather warning for much of the country, stating that windstorms, dust-thunderstorms, hailstorms, and lightning could damage loose structures such as electric poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels. This advisory is valid from today through May 12, 2025.

According to the synoptic situation provided by the PMD, a shallow trough of westerly wave is affecting the northern parts of Pakistan, while moist currents from the Arabian Sea are contributing to the instability. These conditions are expected to generate adverse weather in several regions, including Islamabad.

On a national scale, Saturday and Sunday are expected to be mainly hot and dry across most areas. However, regions including Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Upper/Central Punjab, Balochistan, and Sindh may experience partly cloudy skies, windstorm, and isolated thunderstorms.

In the last 24 hours, Islamabad was among several regions that reported rain and windstorm activity, with isolated showers recorded in various parts of the capital and other regions such as Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

As Islamabad prepares for another potential windstorm, residents are advised to stay updated with PMD alerts and secure outdoor items that may be vulnerable to strong winds.
