James Gunn has confirmed he is already writing his next DC project as Man of Tomorrow moves through post-production ahead of its 2027 release.
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has revealed that he is already working on his next feature film, even as the highly anticipated Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow moves through post-production.
Asked on Threads whether he had started writing his next project, Gunn gave a brief response: “Already in it.”
Gunn wrapped principal photography on Man of Tomorrow in August and is now awaiting an assembly cut of the film. Details about what he is developing next remain under wraps, although his next project is expected to remain connected to the DC Universe launched with 2025’s Superman.
James Gunn Continues Building the DC Universe
Superman, starring David Corenswet, earned roughly $618 million worldwide and established the foundation for Gunn’s revamped DC franchise.
The filmmaker is now preparing for the next chapter with Man of Tomorrow, which will once again feature Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
The sequel will see Superman and Luthor facing the threat of Brainiac, bringing the two characters into an unlikely alliance against a powerful new adversary.
Gunn has previously teased the film’s focus on Luthor, describing it as “as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.”
Man of Tomorrow is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 9 July 2027.
DC Studios Looks Beyond Man of Tomorrow
While Gunn has not revealed what he is writing next, his confirmation suggests that work is already progressing on another project within the expanding DC Universe.
The wider DC slate has produced mixed results, with Supergirl reportedly grossing about $126 million worldwide. Meanwhile, the lower-budget horror film Clayface is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 23 October.
Against that backdrop, Man of Tomorrow is being closely watched as an important release for DC Studios and its developing franchise strategy.
For now, Gunn is keeping his next project secret, but his brief Threads response confirms that another DC story is already taking shape behind the scenes.
