Jason Momoa is stepping into a new chapter of his DC Universe journey, leaving behind his iconic portrayal of Aquaman after eight years.
The 45-year-old actor announced on Instagram that he will play the notorious intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in the upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, set to release on June 26, 2026.
Speculation about Momoa taking on the Lobo role began in 2023. At the time, the actor shared his enthusiasm but confirmed he hadn’t been approached.
In an interview with Fandango, he said, “Lobo was always my favorite. If they call me and ask me to play it? It’s a yeah. But I haven’t received that call.”
That call finally came, as Momoa revealed by resharing his 2023 statement on Instagram with the caption, “They called.” James Gunn, DC Studios CEO and director of Superman: Legacy, welcomed him warmly, commenting, “Welcome, my friend.”
Jason Momoa will star opposite Milly Alcock, who takes on the titular role in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
This move marks a significant shift for the actor, who previously led the Aquaman films. The Aquaman series concluded with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023. Reflecting on the franchise’s uncertain future, Momoa admitted, “It’s not looking too good.”
Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo first appeared in Omega Men #3 in 1983. Known for his vibrant language, rapid regeneration, and chaotic nature, Lobo has earned a reputation as both a menace and an antihero.
Fans are eager to see Momoa breathe life into Lobo, a character he has long admired. While the actor remains open to reprising his role as Aquaman, he is embracing the opportunity to diversify his roles within the DC Universe.
Momoa’s transition underscores his versatility and passion for storytelling, signaling an exciting future for the actor and the evolving DC franchise.
