Academy Award winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale are set to headline Michael Mann’s long-awaited sequel to Heat, according to a report by TheWrap.
The report said DiCaprio and Bale have been locked in for the project, although final contract negotiations are still ongoing.
The sequel to Mann’s acclaimed 1995 crime thriller is also expanding its cast, with Adam Driver reportedly being considered for the role of villain Otis Wardell, while Stephen Graham is in talks to portray Neil McCauley, the master thief originally played by Robert De Niro.
Several actresses are also said to be competing for the role of Sharlene, the wife of Chris Shiherlis, a character portrayed by Ashley Judd in the original film.
Michael Mann has spent years developing Heat 2, which is based on his bestselling 2022 novel of the same name. The story serves as both a prequel and sequel to the original film, exploring the lives of its central characters before and after the events of Heat.
Speaking to The Guardian in a recent interview, Mann reflected on casting Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in the original film.
“It was an automatic ‘it’s a fantastic idea’. I mean, the two greatest actors of their generation,” Mann said, praising De Niro’s “internal power” and Pacino’s ability to bring intensity and unpredictability to his performances.
Released in 1995, Heat grossed approximately $187 million worldwide against a production budget of about $60 million. The film has since become one of Hollywood’s most influential crime dramas, earning a lasting reputation for its realistic action sequences and complex characters.
DiCaprio was most recently seen in One Battle After Another, which premiered last year. Neither the actor nor Warner Bros. has officially confirmed his casting in Heat 2.
Production details and a release date for the sequel have yet to be announced.
