Meta Introduces Ad-Free Subscriptions for Facebook, Instagram

Meta has announced a major change for users in the UK, revealing that ad-free subscriptions for Facebook and Instagram will be rolled out over the coming weeks.

This new option will allow users to enjoy a browsing experience free from advertisements by paying a monthly fee, marking a significant shift in how the social media giant operates in the region.

The subscription plan will cost £2.99 per month if purchased via the web, and £3.99 per month if users choose to subscribe through iOS or Android apps. The slightly higher price on mobile platforms is due to additional charges imposed by Apple and Google for in-app transactions.

These rates apply to the first account linked to your Meta Accounts Center. If you wish to use the ad-free experience on additional accounts, you’ll pay £2 per month on the web or £3 per month on mobile for each subsequent account.

According to Meta, this move comes “in response to recent UK regulatory guidance and following extensive engagement with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)”. It aims to provide users with more control over their data and ad experience. Starting soon, Facebook and Instagram users in the UK who are 18 years and older will receive notifications about this new subscription option.

Once subscribed, users will no longer see any ads across their connected Facebook and Instagram accounts, as long as all accounts are covered under the paid plan. Those who choose not to subscribe will continue using the platforms as they currently do, with personalized ads based on their online activity and interests.

This marks a notable shift in Meta’s approach to advertising, giving users the flexibility to decide how they want to experience social media — either through free, ad-supported access or a premium, ad-free environment.
