Millions affected as Facebook and Instagram experience service disruption
Meta users report Facebook and Instagram outage on Friday, with thousands of users worldwide experiencing difficulties accessing the social media platforms.
Meta Platforms said it was aware of the disruption and working to restore services.
“We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it,” spokesperson Andy Stone said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Thousands of Users Report Disruptions
According to outage tracking website Downdetector, more than 62,000 users reported issues with Facebook, while over 8,000 reports were recorded for Instagram as of 10:11 a.m. ET.
The platform collects user-submitted reports from multiple sources to identify potential service disruptions.
Downdetector noted that actual affected users may differ, as its data is based on voluntary submissions rather than verified internal metrics.
Meta Acknowledges Service Issues
Meta Platforms (Meta Platforms) did not immediately provide details on the cause of the outage or an estimated timeline for full restoration of services.
The company has faced periodic service disruptions in recent years, affecting Facebook, Instagram, and other products across its ecosystem.
Growing Reliance on Digital Platforms
The outage highlights continued concerns over infrastructure stability and global dependence on major social media networks for communication, business, and content distribution.
Analysts say such disruptions underscore the challenges faced by large-scale digital platforms in maintaining uninterrupted global connectivity.
Services Gradually Restoring
While partial access was reportedly restored in some regions, users continued to report intermittent issues as engineers worked to stabilise the platforms.
The incident adds to a growing list of temporary outages affecting major social media services worldwide.
