Microsoft has quietly extended support for Windows 10 by offering an additional year of security updates, providing relief to users who are not yet ready to upgrade to Windows 11.
The company’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme for Windows 10, which was previously set to expire on October 13, 2026, will now continue until October 12, 2027. The move comes as millions of users worldwide continue to rely on Windows 10 despite Microsoft’s push toward Windows 11 adoption.
Microsoft introduced the ESU programme last year to help users maintain security protection after the operating system reaches its official end-of-support date. The programme is available to eligible users who are signed into Windows 10 with a Microsoft account.
The extension highlights the ongoing popularity of Windows 10, which remains widely used across personal and business computers. Many users have been reluctant to switch to Windows 11 due to hardware requirements, interface changes, or personal preference.
Under the Extended Security Updates programme, Windows 10 devices will continue receiving critical security patches and protection against newly discovered vulnerabilities beyond the operating system’s official support lifecycle.
The latest decision effectively grants Windows 10 users an extra year of support, reducing immediate pressure to upgrade their devices or transition to Windows 11.
Microsoft has been actively encouraging customers to migrate to Windows 11, promoting its newer operating system as more secure and better equipped for modern computing needs. However, the continued demand for Windows 10 appears to have influenced the company’s decision to prolong security coverage.
While the extension offers additional breathing room for users, Microsoft has not indicated whether support will be extended again beyond October 2027. Any future decision is likely to depend on user adoption rates and the broader Windows ecosystem.
For now, Windows 10 users can continue using the operating system with access to security updates for another year, ensuring protection against emerging cyber threats while they plan their next upgrade.
