Monsoon Woes: KATI Seeks Action on Drainage, Traffic Flow

KATI

KARACHI, July 12, 2024 – With monsoon rains on the horizon, the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) is urging local authorities to implement a comprehensive plan to mitigate potential disruptions.

KATI President Johar Qandhari called for immediate action from both city and district administrations to ensure smooth operations during the rainy season.

Citing the Meteorological Department’s forecasts, Qandhari emphasized the urgency of establishing effective drainage and sanitation measures. He stressed the need to activate monsoon emergency relief camps at strategic locations throughout the city and districts.

Focus on Drainage and Infrastructure

KATI President Qandhari pinpointed the city’s inadequate drainage system as a major concern. He urged swift action to clear drains and sewage lines, preventing waterlogging and disruptions in Karachi’s critical industrial and commercial hub. To further enhance preparedness, KATI President suggested mapping low-lying areas, particularly in Korangi, and implementing improvements to the drainage system’s capacity. Additionally, he called for uniform road designs that facilitate efficient water flow into the sewer system.

Addressing Traffic Woes During Monsoon

Qandhari highlighted the unique challenges faced by the Korangi industrial area during heavy rains. Rising water levels in the Malir River often block traffic at the Korangi crossing and causeway, diverting vehicles to the already congested Jam Sadiq Bridge. To address this, KATI Chief proposed that the provincial administration equip all districts with dewatering machines to clear blockages in the drainage system. He emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation, including continuous monitoring and ensuring the timely availability of necessary equipment and supplies.

Furthermore, KATI President called for the identification of alternative routes, machinery deployment, and the presence of traffic personnel at critical locations to maintain uninterrupted traffic flow during and after the rains.

Collaboration is Key

KATI President Qandhari concluded by expressing the association’s commitment to supporting the district administration and police in managing the monsoon season effectively. He emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among various departments and institutions to ensure a smooth monsoon season for Karachi’s residents and businesses.
