Pakistan has raised petrol and high-speed diesel prices under its daily petroleum pricing mechanism, with the new rates effective from September 16.
ISLAMABAD, September 16, 2026: The government has announced new prices for petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) under Pakistan’s daily petroleum pricing mechanism, with both products becoming more expensive from Wednesday.
The government increased the price of petrol by Rs4.10 per litre and HSD by Rs6.41 per litre, citing fluctuations in international oil prices.
Following the latest revision, petrol will be available at Rs384.34 per litre, compared with the previous rate of Rs380.24.
The price of high-speed diesel has increased from Rs409.42 to Rs415.83 per litre, representing a rise of Rs6.41 per litre.
According to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the revised rates will remain effective for September 16 under the daily pricing mechanism.
New petrol and HSD rates
The latest petroleum price revision is as follows:
| Petroleum product | Previous price | New price | Increase |
| Petrol | Rs380.24/litre | Rs384.34/litre | Rs4.10 |
| High-speed diesel | Rs409.42/litre | Rs415.83/litre | Rs6.41 |
The latest increase comes amid continued volatility in international oil markets, with geopolitical tensions and concerns over possible disruptions to global energy supplies affecting petroleum prices.
Daily petroleum pricing mechanism
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has started publishing daily petroleum prices on its website as part of efforts to improve transparency and allow changes in international oil prices to be reflected more quickly in domestic fuel rates.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said daily prices are calculated using a seven-day average of international market prices, in line with international practice.
Under the framework, OGRA issues daily ex-depot prices for petrol and HSD based on average international market prices recorded during the preceding seven days.
The regulator is authorised to announce daily petroleum prices without obtaining prior approval from the prime minister or the federal government.
However, prices notified on Fridays remain unchanged on Saturdays and Sundays.
The framework also provides for OGRA to publish daily Platts reference prices, while the petroleum levy cannot exceed the limit approved by the federal cabinet.
Any change in the petroleum levy rate requires approval from the Finance Division.
Pakistan shifts from fortnightly fuel reviews
Pakistan previously revised petroleum prices on a fortnightly basis. The government later introduced a weekly review mechanism following increased volatility in global oil markets.
The move towards daily pricing was subsequently adopted amid concerns that significant fluctuations in international crude prices could take longer to be reflected in domestic fuel rates.
The latest mechanism is intended to allow changes in international petroleum prices to be passed on to consumers more frequently while improving transparency in the determination of domestic fuel prices.
