Islamabad, March 8, 2025 – A fresh weather system is set to bring significant rainfall across multiple regions of Pakistan, raising concerns over potential flooding and landslides in various areas.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the new weather system, driven by westerly winds, is expected to enter the northern parts of the country on Sunday, March 9, and will persist until March 16. This prolonged weather activity is likely to impact numerous cities across Pakistan, bringing much-needed rain but also posing risks of adverse effects such as flash floods, urban flooding, and landslides in mountainous areas.
The PMD forecast indicates that cities including Chitral, Murree, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir will receive consistent rainfall from March 9 through March 16. Islamabad and several cities in Punjab, including Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, and Chakwal, are expected to experience showers beginning on Monday, March 11. By March 12, widespread rain is likely to affect most parts of Punjab, continuing through March 16. Additionally, Peshawar, Charsadda, and Mardan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are also anticipated to receive substantial precipitation.
Weather experts warn that heavy rainfall in major urban centers such as Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, and Quetta may lead to urban flooding, disrupting daily life and transportation. Furthermore, Balochistan is expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by rain on March 14 and 15, adding to the concerns of local authorities.
Meanwhile, upper regions of Pakistan, particularly Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, are forecast to experience heavy snowfall, which could lead to road blockages and difficulties for residents and travelers. The PMD has issued warnings regarding possible landslides in these regions due to the intensity of the rains and melting snow.
Authorities have advised fishermen, tourists, and travelers to exercise caution during this period, as rough weather conditions could pose serious risks. Additionally, farmers have been urged to take preventive measures to safeguard their crops from potential damage caused by excessive rainfall.
As Pakistan braces for this extended weather activity, residents in affected areas are encouraged to stay updated with official weather reports and follow safety precautions to mitigate risks associated with heavy rains and flooding.
