Pakistan and Iran discuss railway cooperation, regional connectivity

ISLAMABAD, May 7, 2026 — Pakistan and Iran on Thursday discussed expanding railway cooperation and strengthening regional connectivity during a meeting between Pakistan’s federal minister for railways and Iranian Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam.

The discussions focused on bilateral relations, railway infrastructure projects, and the broader regional situation, according to an official statement.

The federal minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to deepening longstanding ties with Iran, describing the relationship as rooted in historical, cultural, and mutual respect.

Both sides reviewed progress on railway connectivity initiatives, particularly the Taftan–Zahedan railway link and the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul freight train project aimed at improving regional trade routes between South Asia, Central Asia, and Europe.

Officials said stronger railway cooperation could significantly enhance trade, logistics, and economic integration across the region.

The meeting also covered ongoing work related to the repair and rehabilitation of the Quetta–Taftan railway section. Pakistan emphasized the importance of infrastructure upgrades and security measures to ensure uninterrupted rail operations along the route.

Regional developments, including the situation in the Middle East, were also discussed. Pakistan reiterated support for peace, diplomacy, and dialogue to address regional tensions.

Ambassador Moghadam appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic role in promoting regional peace and stability and acknowledged its recent efforts toward de-escalation and dialogue.

Both sides also praised initiatives undertaken under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir aimed at supporting regional peace efforts.

The meeting concluded with both countries agreeing to continue enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in the railway and transport sectors.
