Pakistan Set to Announce Petroleum Prices for First Half of July 2023

Islamabad, June 27, 2023: The Pakistani government is gearing up to announce the petroleum prices for the first half of July 2023 on June 30.

This revision marks the initial adjustment in petroleum prices for the fiscal year 2023-24, with a notable change being the enhanced petroleum levy from Rs50 to Rs60 per liter. The government has already obtained approval for this levy increment from the National Assembly.

Speculation suggests that the upcoming announcement may include the implementation of the petroleum levy, resulting in a surge in petroleum prices across the country. However, the government has set an ambitious target for petroleum levy generation. According to budget documents, Pakistan aims to generate approximately Rs870 billion through the petroleum levy in the fiscal year 2023-24, demonstrating the government’s determination to enhance revenue despite prevailing challenges in the petroleum sector.

In the preceding fiscal year 2022-2023, the government initially aimed to collect Rs855 billion through the petroleum levy. However, this target was later revised downward to Rs542 billion. As a result, the government now faces the task of collecting an additional Rs328 billion in the upcoming fiscal year to meet its ambitious revenue goal.

One significant aspect of this plan is the government’s decision to increase petroleum prices in the next fiscal year, despite benefiting from affordable oil imports from Russia and falling international prices. This choice underscores the government’s intention to leverage the petroleum sector as a means of generating the necessary funds, despite external factors suggesting otherwise.

The rise in petroleum prices could have cascading effects on various sectors of the economy, leading to increased transportation costs, higher prices of essential commodities, and ultimately burdening the average consumer.
