Renowned Pakistani climber Samina Baig was airlifted to safety on Sunday after falling ill during a K2 expedition. Baig, who made history in 2013 by becoming the first Pakistani woman to summit Mount Everest, was part of an eight-member Pakistan-Italy joint women’s team attempting to conquer the world’s second-highest peak.
Health Deteriorates at High Altitude
On July 5th, Baig’s health began to deteriorate, forcing her to abandon her climb. The harsh weather conditions initially hindered helicopter evacuation, prompting a challenging rescue operation.
Baig was transported by horseback to Askole, the last village before the K2 base camp, before being transferred by road to Skardu. She is currently receiving medical attention at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Skardu.
According to reports, her condition has shown slight improvement, thanks to the lower altitude and medical care provided by a team of army doctors.
