Pakistan’s Athletes Ready to Shine at Asian Games 2023

The countdown to Hangzhou has officially begun, as Pakistan’s first wave of athletes, hailing from diverse disciplines such as sailing and volleyball, is set to touch down on September 15.

With a deep sense of pride and determination, Pakistan’s athletes are poised to illuminate the Asian Games 2023 with their remarkable performances.

The anticipation is palpable, as the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) made a resounding announcement on September 14, unveiling the lineup for the eagerly awaited Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, slated to commence on September 23, 2023.

A formidable delegation of 262 athletes and officials is all set to carry the Pakistani flag high on the international stage, showcasing their immense talent and unwavering commitment.

Within this dynamic Pakistani contingent, we witness a vibrant mosaic of 137 male and 53 female athletes, accompanied by a commendable contingent of 72 officials.

It is noteworthy, however, that Pakistan will compete in 24 sports instead of the originally planned 25, as the E-sport team had to withdraw from the competition.

Initially, a 12-member E-sport squad was poised to represent Pakistan, but unforeseen circumstances led to their withdrawal. Additionally, sponsorship challenges forced five athletes and two officials from the fencing team to step back, leaving Pakistan represented solely by the determined Mujadid Awan in fencing.

In an unexpected turn of events, Najia Rasool, designated as the official for the taekwondo squad, had to withdraw due to an injury sustained by athlete Fatima tuz Zehra.

Further roster adjustments came into play as several prominent figures withdrew, including the gold medalist Yashal Shah, rowing official Rizwan ul Haq, swimming official Uzma Preto, and three hockey coaches – Rehan Butt, Ayaz Mehmood, and Saqlain – who were relieved of their roles by the Pakistan Hockey Federation.

Prior to the finalization, a provisional list of 280 athletes and officials, accompanied by an additional 14 contingent officials, was submitted to the Asian Games Organizing Committee for accreditation.

Cricket will undoubtedly be the focal point of Pakistan’s representation at the Asian Games, with an impressive roster of 39 players and officials spanning both men’s and women’s competitions.

Athletics will follow closely with 22 players and officials participating in various disciplines, while hockey is gearing up with a robust team of 21 members.

In terms of leadership, Hamdan Nazir, the president of the Pakistan Rowing Federation and Vice President of the Railways Sports Board, has been appointed as the chief of the mission for Pakistan’s contingent, with Munir Ahmed serving as the deputy chief of the mission.
