Islamabad, May 11, 2024 – Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is gearing up to spread its wings to Europe, marking a significant milestone in its service expansion.
A spokesperson for the national carrier, Abdullah Hafeez, revealed plans for the inaugural flight to Paris, marking the resumption of its European operations.
Speaking at a press conference held at PIA’s Islamabad office, Hafeez, accompanied by a delegation from the Council of Economic and Energy Journalists (CEEJ), outlined the airline’s strategic move towards Europe. He announced that PIA is set to secure permissions from international regulatory bodies in a phased manner throughout this month, paving the way for the commencement of flights to Paris and subsequently expanding its reach across Europe.
Highlighting the specifics of the plan, Hafeez mentioned that the first direct flight to Heathrow Airport in London is scheduled for August 14. Currently operating with seven Triple Seven aircraft, PIA anticipates bolstering its fleet with two additional Triple Seven aircraft within the next two months, thereby enhancing its operational capacity to serve Europe and the UK efficiently with a fleet of nine aircraft.
Addressing the challenges faced by PIA in recent years, Hafeez elaborated on the impact of aircraft shortages and financial setbacks, which led to a reduction in flight routes from 34 countries to just 14. However, with the imminent restoration of routes and the expansion into Europe, PIA remains optimistic about reclaiming its position as a preferred choice for travelers.
Commenting on the significance of this development, Hafeez emphasized that Pakistan’s air service agreements with 97 countries provide a robust foundation for PIA’s global connectivity aspirations. As the airline prepares to reintroduce direct flights to the UK after their suspension in 2020, there is a palpable sense of anticipation among travelers and aviation enthusiasts alike.
The announcement of PIA’s foray into Europe comes as a testament to the airline’s resilience and determination to overcome adversities. Despite facing formidable challenges in recent years, PIA’s ambitious expansion plans underscore its commitment to revitalizing its operations and regaining its foothold in the fiercely competitive aviation industry.
As Pakistan International Airlines embarks on this new chapter in its storied history, all eyes are on the skies, awaiting the dawn of a new era in transcontinental air travel, marked by the iconic green and white livery of PIA.
