Islamabad, April 30, 2026 — Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday launched a landmark five-year Rs3.2 trillion “Apna Ghar Program”, aimed at constructing 500,000 affordable homes across Pakistan for low-income citizens.
Addressing the launch ceremony, the prime minister said the initiative would not only enable homeownership but also act as a major economic driver by boosting industrial activity and generating employment across multiple sectors.
Affordable Housing for All
Describing the initiative as a “sacred obligation,” Shehbaz Sharif said the program is designed to support citizens who lack the financial resources to build their own homes.

The scheme will be implemented nationwide, covering all provinces as well as Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Key Features of Apna Ghar Program
• Financing of 500,000 housing units over five years
• Initial target of 50,000 homes in the first year
• Allocation of Rs321 billion for year one
• Total funding size of Rs3.2 trillion
• Loans of up to Rs10 million per applicant
• 20-year repayment period
• 5% markup for the first 10 years, followed by market rates
• Eligibility for construction on plots up to 10 marlas
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The prime minister emphasized that the housing program would serve as a powerful economic multiplier, stimulating growth in construction, manufacturing, and allied industries.
“This program holds the promise of revitalizing our industrial and commercial sectors while paving the way for economic prosperity,” he said.
Government and Banking Sector Role
Ishaq Dar, Muhammad Aurangzeb, and other senior officials attended the ceremony, alongside representatives from the banking and construction sectors.
The prime minister appreciated the role of financial institutions and directed banks to actively support the initiative. He announced that top-performing banks would be recognized with national awards on August 14.
Addressing Housing Shortage
Housing Minister Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada highlighted that Pakistan faces a shortage of nearly 10 million housing units, underscoring the urgency of such initiatives.
Monitoring and Implementation
Shehbaz Sharif pledged to personally review the program’s progress on a monthly basis to ensure transparency, timely disbursements, and effective implementation.
