PM Shehbaz Orders Complete Digitization of Taxation System

Islamabad, March 5, 2024 – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has issued a directive for the immediate digitization of the country’s taxation system, aiming to enhance transparency, boost tax collection, and eradicate issues such as tax evasion, corruption, and smuggling.

In a high-level meeting at the Prime Minister House, PM Shehbaz emphasized the adoption of the world’s best model for the digitization of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the apex body responsible for operating the taxation system.

Prime Minister Shehbaz, who personally oversees the digitization progress, highlighted the need to learn from international standards to ensure the effectiveness of the process. He stressed that the digitization initiative aims to bring convenience to the general public and the business community while strengthening the country’s economic structure.

During the meeting, PM Shehbaz announced the encouragement of large taxpayers and high-performing FBR officers, while assuring that those engaged in malpractices would be held accountable. He directed authorities to present proposals for reducing government expenditures and restructuring the economic framework.

FBR Chairman Malik Amjed Zubair Tiwana briefed the meeting on various measures taken to enhance tax collection, streamline refund processes, expand the tax net, automate procedures, combat tax evasion, institutional corruption, and smuggling. However, expressing dissatisfaction with the progress, PM Shehbaz directed the immediate initiation of complete digitization and automation of the FBR in line with international standards.

Acknowledging the efforts of former caretaker finance minister Dr. Shamshad Akhtar and the finance team, PM Shehbaz praised their dedication in fortifying the foundation laid by his government to prevent Pakistan from defaulting on its obligations.

Addressing Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, the prime minister commended her merit policy and expressed his confidence in the capabilities of the country’s talented individuals. He emphasized the importance of taking up the challenge to lead the country towards prosperity and development.

PM Shehbaz announced that efficient, honest, and professional officers would be rewarded, with a specific focus on deploying capable officers in the track and trace system. He highlighted the Ministry of Interior’s collaboration with the Pakistan Army to curb smuggling.

In a commitment to expanding the tax net, FBR Chairman Malik Amjed Zubair Tiwana reported that the target of bringing 1.5 million more taxpayers into the system during the current financial year is on track. The prime minister directed the immediate implementation of legislation for digitizing invoicing, reinforcing his determination to overcome challenges and pave the way for the country’s economic prosperity.

The meeting, attended by key officials and high-ranking individuals, marks a significant step towards leveraging technology to revolutionize Pakistan’s taxation system and ensure financial stability.
