Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding formally signed by US and Iranian presidents, marking a major diplomatic achievement for Pakistan.
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday formally signed the historic “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” (MoU) as mediator, cementing Pakistan’s role in a landmark diplomatic agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at easing regional tensions and restoring stability.
The agreement was electronically signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif endorsing the accord as mediator. The agreement, known as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, is intended to serve as a framework for ending hostilities and advancing broader negotiations between the two countries.
According to reports, President Trump signed the document while visiting French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles, while President Pezeshkian signed the accord in Tehran. Images released by Iranian state media showed the Iranian president displaying the document bearing President Trump’s signature.
The Prime Minister’s Office later released photographs of Shehbaz Sharif signing the memorandum and presenting the completed document carrying the signatures of both leaders.
Announcing the development on social media, the prime minister said he was honoured to witness the formalisation of the agreement, describing it as a significant step towards peace and stability in the region.
“The historic Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has been electronically signed today between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the prime minister stated, adding that the accord had been signed by the presidents of both countries and endorsed by Pakistan as mediator.
Under the agreement, the MoU enters into force immediately. As part of the initial confidence-building measures, Iran is expected to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping, while the United States will begin lifting its naval blockade and easing restrictions that had contributed to regional tensions.
The memorandum establishes a framework for a 60-day negotiation period aimed at reaching a comprehensive and binding agreement on broader issues, including regional security, sanctions relief and nuclear-related concerns.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated President Trump for pursuing diplomacy and expressed appreciation to Iran’s leadership for supporting the peace initiative. He also acknowledged the efforts of negotiating teams and regional partners, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt, for their contributions to the diplomatic process.
The prime minister also praised the role of Syed Asim Munir, describing his efforts as instrumental in promoting regional stability and supporting the mediation process.
The agreement represents one of the most significant diplomatic developments in recent years and highlights Pakistan’s growing role in regional conflict resolution. The successful conclusion of the Islamabad MoU is expected to pave the way for further negotiations between Washington and Tehran while contributing to economic and security stability across the Middle East.
