PMD Forecasts Soaring Temperatures, Heatwave Hits Pakistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a countrywide alert, warning of a severe heatwave expected to grip Pakistan starting April 13.

The alert comes as a high-pressure system develops in the upper atmosphere, setting the stage for extreme weather conditions across the nation.

According to the PMD, southern parts of Pakistan — particularly Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan — will face intense heatwave conditions from April 14 onward. Daytime temperatures in these regions are forecasted to rise 6–8°C above the seasonal average, continuing through April 18.

Meanwhile, northern and central areas — including Islamabad, upper and central Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir — will also feel the impact of the approaching heatwave, with temperatures expected to climb 4–6°C above normal. The PMD has also cautioned that night-time temperatures will remain unusually high, preventing relief even after sunset.

This prolonged heatwave is not only a health concern but could also trigger secondary weather events such as dust and windstorms. These conditions pose a threat to infrastructure, including electric poles, solar panels, trees, and vehicles. Citizens have been urged to remain indoors during peak sunlight hours, particularly vulnerable groups like children, the old-age, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Staying hydrated and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities are essential precautions during this heatwave.

Farmers have been specifically advised to revise their crop and irrigation schedules. The heatwave could disrupt wheat harvesting and cause distress to livestock. Protective measures must be taken to mitigate potential agricultural losses.

Furthermore, the Met Office has highlighted the risk of accelerated snowmelt in the country’s northern areas due to rising temperatures. This could elevate the chances of flooding in vulnerable regions between April 14 and 18. Relevant departments are on high alert, and contingency plans are being activated to manage the potential fallout.

With another intense heatwave approaching, authorities are emphasizing early action and public awareness to minimize risks. This marks a critical period for both citizens and administrators as Pakistan braces for one of the season’s most intense heatwaves.
