English cricketing legend James Anderson has been awarded a knighthood in former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s resignation honours list, marking a historic moment in the world of sports. The accolade, announced on Friday, celebrates Anderson’s extraordinary achievements and contributions to cricket over more than two decades.
Anderson, 42, retired from international Test cricket in July 2024, bowing out as England’s all-time leading wicket-taker. His final tally of 704 Test wickets places him third on the all-time list behind legendary spinners Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Shane Warne (708). Among fast bowlers, Anderson stands alone at the top—no other pacer has come close to matching his consistency, longevity, or sheer dominance.
Despite stepping away from the international arena, Anderson remains active in domestic cricket, continuing to play for Lancashire. Although he missed the beginning of the 2025 County Championship season due to a calf injury, the seasoned seamer hasn’t ruled out further play. “I’m not ruling out playing for another one, two or three years. We’ll see how it goes,” Anderson said. “I could get a month in and think ‘absolutely not,’ but I could have a great year, we could win everything, and they might want to keep me next year. So we’ll just have to wait and see.”
Anderson’s illustrious career began with his ODI debut in 2002 and Test debut in 2003. Over 188 Tests and 194 ODIs, he built a reputation as a master of swing bowling, known for his relentless precision and fierce competitiveness. His rise from a young Lancashire prospect to a cricketing knight has inspired generations of players in England and beyond.
The knighthood is a fitting tribute to Anderson’s legendary status, adding to a list of accolades that already includes numerous cricketing records and honors. It also reflects the impact he has had on English cricket, both on and off the field.
With his name now etched in history as “Sir James Anderson,” the cricketing world salutes a player whose legacy is as enduring as his remarkable career. Anderson’s knighthood is not just a personal milestone—it’s a celebration of excellence, perseverance, and passion for the game.
