PMD warns of GLOF and flash flood risks in northern Pakistan

Pakistan Weather

Pakistan Meteorological Department on Sunday warned that a moderate westerly wave is expected to enter the upper parts of the country, increasing the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), debris flows and flash flooding in vulnerable areas of northern Pakistan.

According to the weather advisory, the system is likely to affect Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Sunday and extend to Gilgit-Baltistan by Monday.

The PMD said the weather system is expected to bring widespread rain, wind and thunderstorms to upper parts of the country, with isolated heavy rainfall likely in mountainous catchment areas.

Vulnerable regions face higher flood risk

The Met Office warned that the prevailing weather conditions could significantly raise the chances of GLOFs and flash floods in several vulnerable regions.

Areas identified as highly vulnerable include Swat, Lower Chitral, Dir, Upper Hazara, Kohistan, Hoper, Ghulkin, Shishper, Ghizer, Hunza, Nagar, Ghanche, Shigar and Astore.

Officials warned that heavy rainfall in glaciated valleys could trigger sudden flooding events, posing risks to local communities and infrastructure.

Residents advised to take precautionary measures

The PMD advised residents living in glaciated valleys to avoid staying near riverbanks and stream beds during rainfall.

People were also urged to remain alert for sudden changes in water colour or unusual sounds in local nullahs, which may indicate debris movement or rising floodwater.

Authorities advised residents to move livestock and essential belongings to safer and elevated areas as a precautionary step.

The weather department also urged communities to stay in contact with Community-Based Disaster Risk Management Committees (CBDRMCs) for timely updates and emergency coordination.

Authorities directed to remain on high alert

Disaster management authorities have been directed to ensure round-the-clock preparedness and maintain communication with technical focal persons in remote valleys.

The PMD further instructed relevant departments to disseminate weather alerts through SMS services and social media platforms to improve public awareness and preparedness.

All concerned departments and residents of vulnerable areas have been urged to remain vigilant and adopt precautionary measures to avoid any untoward incidents during the forecast period.
