PMD Karachi closely monitors cyclone development in Arabian Sea

Karachi, May 21, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) in Karachi has announced that it is vigilantly observing a potential cyclone formation in the Arabian Sea.

According to the PMD, a low-pressure area (LPA) is expected to form over the east-central Arabian Sea within the next 12 hours, signaling the early stages of cyclone development.

The PMD stated that an upper air cyclonic circulation extending up to mid-tropospheric levels has been observed over the east-central Arabian Sea, specifically off the coasts of North Karnataka and Goa (India). Under this influence, the low-pressure area is projected to move gradually northward and may intensify into a depression within the following 36 hours. This evolving system could develop into a cyclone, prompting heightened monitoring efforts.

Karachi’s Cyclone Warning Center, under the PMD, is actively tracking the system and remains on high alert. Officials emphasized that any updates or warnings will be promptly issued as the situation develops. The department has advised all relevant authorities and emergency response agencies to stay in close coordination with PMD Karachi and follow its official advisories to ensure preparedness.

Meanwhile, in its daily weather report, the PMD has warned of a severe heatwave gripping most parts of the country. Daytime temperatures are expected to soar 4 to 6°C above normal in southern regions, including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan. In central and northern regions such as Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir, temperatures are forecasted to be 5 to 7°C above normal.

The synoptic situation indicates that continental air is dominating most areas, while a high-pressure system is stationed over central and southern parts of the country. This pattern is likely to persist over the next three days.

Weather conditions for Wednesday and Thursday remain predominantly hot and dry across Pakistan, though some isolated areas in Kashmir and adjoining hilly regions may experience partly cloudy skies with rain-thunderstorms in the evening or night.

The PMD in Karachi reiterated its commitment to monitoring the cyclone activity over the Arabian Sea and keeping the public informed. With the potential cyclone forming and intense heatwave conditions, vigilance is strongly advised.
