SAI cheers Karachi’s leap toward water self-sufficiency

Karachi, May 21, 2025 – The Site Association of Industry (SAI) Karachi has declared the TP-1 and TP-3 recycled water treatment plants as transformative projects essential for achieving water self-sufficiency in the city’s largest industrial zone.

These initiatives are seen as a major step forward in ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply for industrial production.

A high-level SAI delegation, led by President Ahmed Azeem Alvi, Chief Coordinator Saleem Parekh, and Kamran Arabi, visited the treatment facilities to assess ongoing work. They were accompanied by APTMA Zonal Chairman Anwar Aziz and Executive Committee members Ahmed Zulfiqar Chaudhry, Muhammad Kamran Lakhani, Muhammad Altaf Shaikhani, as well as technical experts from Pak Oasis and Techno Consult International.

During the site visit, officials informed the delegation that the TP-3 plant is currently treating 35 million gallons of water daily. The treated water, after undergoing strict purification processes, is safely discharged into the sea, marking a significant achievement in environmental management and industrial sustainability. SAI and visiting stakeholders praised this effort, noting the immense potential of recycled water to reduce Karachi’s dependence on freshwater sources for industrial use.

SAI highlighted that repurposing recycled water for industrial processes could safeguard future operations from Karachi’s persistent water shortages. The delegation expressed full support for Mayor Murtaza Wahab and Water & Sewerage Corporation (WSC) CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui’s strategic vision, describing the move as a critical milestone toward long-term water resilience.

A technical briefing was also held on an innovative pilot project aimed at converting treated effluent into reusable process water. The discussion focused on water distribution logistics, future scalability, and integration with the SITE area’s broader water infrastructure.

SAI President Ahmed Azeem Alvi commended Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Mayor Wahab for their forward-looking leadership. He stressed that SAI’s industrial members view these water projects as a lifeline for sustainable growth.

“The SITE Industrial Area is entering a new era,” Alvi stated. “These water recycling initiatives are not just about conservation—they are about securing the future of Karachi’s industries with a reliable and eco-friendly water supply.”

SAI reaffirmed its commitment to working with public and private stakeholders to advance water sustainability in the region.
