Preliminary report on Karachi deep sea drilling submitted

oil exploration

KARACHI – A multinational joint venture comprising ENI, Exploration and Production Pakistan BV (EEPP), and Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has initiated the preliminary phase of offshore drilling for oil and gas in Karachi’s ultra-deep waters.

The consortium has completed an initial 12-hour drilling operation and submitted a report to the relevant authorities.

The offshore drilling operation is being conducted by a substantial drilling ship, aptly named the “Mother of All Rigs,” alongside three supply vessels. These vessels set sail last night to commence the drilling activities.

The focus of this joint venture is the Kekra-1 well, situated in the Indus-G block, approximately 280 kilometers from the Karachi coast. Eni Pakistan operates this block, while EEPP is responsible for drilling the well. Additionally, two prominent Pakistani entities, the state-owned Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC) and Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), are integral members of this joint venture. Each of the four companies holds a 25 percent participating interest in the block.

The initiation of offshore drilling in Karachi’s ultra-deep waters marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to explore and harness its natural resources. The potential discovery of oil and gas in these waters could have far-reaching implications for the country’s energy sector, offering the promise of increased energy security and reduced reliance on imported energy resources.

This venture represents a critical juncture for Pakistan’s energy landscape, as the country seeks to address its energy needs through domestic production. The deep-water drilling project is expected to yield valuable insights into the presence of hydrocarbon resources in the region, which, if found in significant quantities, could contribute substantially to Pakistan’s energy reserves.

As the joint venture progresses with its drilling activities, the findings from this operation will be closely monitored by both local and international stakeholders. The results of this offshore drilling endeavor have the potential to reshape the energy dynamics of Pakistan, paving the way for increased energy self-sufficiency and a more secure energy future.

The success of this venture could significantly boost Pakistan’s domestic energy production and, in turn, reduce its dependency on costly energy imports. This development underscores the growing importance of diversifying energy sources and promoting sustainable energy practices, which are essential for the country’s economic growth and energy security.

The joint venture’s progress in offshore drilling serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts of both local and international players in advancing Pakistan’s energy exploration and production capabilities. As the project unfolds, it holds the promise of transforming the energy sector in Pakistan and contributing to the country’s long-term energy sustainability.
