PTA Intensify Crackdown on IMEI Tampering, Illegal SIM Issuance

Pakistan Telecom Authority

In a renewed crackdown to safeguard Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in coordination with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), has ramped up enforcement against illegal IMEI tampering and unauthorized SIM issuance.

In two major operations, the PTA and NCCIA targeted individuals and entities involved in unlawful digital practices that compromise the country’s telecom security.

The first operation was carried out by the PTA Zonal Office Karachi, in collaboration with NCCIA Hyderabad. The joint team raided a mobile repair shop located in Chirag Complex, Unit 8, Latifabad, Hyderabad.

During the raid, officials seized a desktop computer and specialized software used for cloning IMEI numbers. Two individuals were taken into custody and handed over to the NCCIA for further legal proceedings.

In a separate but related action, NCCIA responded to a formal complaint filed by PTA Karachi and raided a Zong franchise operating near Kiran/Memon Hospital in Gulzar-e-Hijri, Scheme 33, Karachi. The raid uncovered unauthorized activities involving the issuance of illegal SIM cards.

Devices suspected of being used in these unlawful practices were confiscated, and two individuals, including the branch manager of the franchise, were arrested. A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged, and investigations are currently ongoing.

These raids mark another decisive step in PTA’s broader initiative to curb telecom fraud, protect user data, and uphold regulatory standards across Pakistan.

Illegal IMEI tampering poses a significant threat to national security, as it enables mobile device anonymity and circumvents lawful monitoring systems. Similarly, unauthorized SIM issuance can be exploited for fraudulent or criminal purposes.

The PTA reiterated its commitment to working closely with law enforcement agencies to eliminate such practices, ensuring a secure and transparent telecom environment. The authority has also urged citizens and industry stakeholders to report suspicious activities to help combat cyber-related crimes effectively.
