PTA Introduces Facility to Prevent SIM Blocking Abroad

Pakistan Telecom Authority

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken another significant step to facilitate overseas Pakistanis by introducing a mechanism to prevent SIM blocking during extended foreign stays.

The initiative is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted mobile connectivity for Pakistani citizens living, studying, or working abroad.

According to PTA, the new facility allows subscribers to formally inform their respective mobile network operators about their foreign stay for a specific period. Once registered, the SIM will remain active and will not be blocked due to inactivity, subject to applicable terms and charges, if any. This move aligns with PTA’s broader commitment to serving the Pakistani diaspora and strengthening digital inclusion.

Previously, many overseas Pakistanis faced SIM suspension or permanent blocking after prolonged inactivity, often creating difficulties in accessing banking services, OTPs, government portals, and staying in touch with family back home. PTA’s latest measure directly addresses these concerns by enabling users to retain SIM ownership while residing abroad.

The authority emphasized that the facility ensures continuity of essential telecom services and eliminates the need to re-verify or reissue SIMs upon returning to Pakistan. By maintaining active numbers, overseas citizens can securely access financial services, receive important alerts, and remain digitally connected with Pakistan.

PTA noted that subscribers can avail themselves of this option by contacting their mobile service providers before or during their stay abroad. The duration of SIM retention can be defined based on the user’s requirements, making the process flexible and user-friendly.

This initiative is part of PTA’s ongoing efforts to modernize Pakistan’s telecom sector and adapt regulations to evolving user needs. It also complements national goals of improving digital connectivity and enhancing services for Pakistanis living overseas.

Industry experts have welcomed the move, stating that it will significantly benefit millions of Pakistanis abroad and reduce operational challenges for telecom operators. The step is also expected to boost customer satisfaction and trust in Pakistan’s telecom regulatory framework.

PTA reaffirmed its commitment to empowering overseas Pakistanis and strengthening Pakistan’s digital footprint globally. With this latest facility, the regulator aims to ensure that distance from home does not translate into digital disconnection.

Overseas Pakistanis are encouraged to consult their respective operators for detailed procedures and charges to avail themselves of this SIM retention facility during foreign stays.
